**About QIMR Berghofer**:

Based in Herston, Brisbane and working in close collaboration with clinicians and other research institutes, QIMR Berghofer is home to more than 600 scientists, students and non-research staff.

**About the Cellular and Molecular Neurodegeneration Laboratory**:
The Cellular and Molecular Neurodegeneration laboratory investigates the cause and potential treatments for brain diseases including dementia (Alzheimer’s disease), motor neuron disease (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), Huntington’s disease and Childhood dementia. These disorders, collectively known as neurodegenerative diseases, are a growing health issue in Australia and worldwide with few treatment options available. In order to gain a better understanding of these diseases and develop new therapeutic approaches, the research team is currently developing new human brain cell culture methods for microglia, astrocytes, brain endothelial cells, organoids (mini-brains), and olfactory (nasal) cells. The lab is utilising these new 2D and 3D human brain cell models to understand brain disease pathways, and the impact of environmental factors such as air pollution, SARS-CoV-2, and bushfire smoke on brain health. The team has also established platforms for drug screening to identify potential new therapeutics for treatment of brain diseases.

**Role Purpose / Responsibilities**:
We are seeking an experienced stem cell researcher, with a strong background in iPSC culture and differentiation. Your duties will include the differentiation of patient iPSCs to brain cell types (e.g. neurons, astrocytes and microglia) for the development of cellular models of neurodegeneration for disease modelling and drug screening purposes.

To be successful in this role you will have...
- PhD in a relevant scientific field
- Experienced in pluripotent stem cell culture and differentiation
- Experienced in microscopy and molecular biology techniques, specifically in relation to cell characterisation
- Ability to conduct experiments independently or with mínimal supervision
- Thorough and consistent in experimental and data recording
- Ability to communicate research findings in written manuscripts or conference presentations
- Good communication skills within a research team

**Desirable**
- Understanding of 3D tissue culture and co-culture methods
- Understanding of neurosciences
- Some grant writing experience

**Remuneration**: Salary range is $ 88,849 to $ 95,329 p.a.* plus super and salary packaging. This is a full-time appointment for 1 year with the possibility to extend. Part-time position will also be considered.
