Mental Health & Neuroscience Program
The position is under the Mental Health and Neuroscience Program.

This program focuses on a range of mental health and neuroscience areas including Alzheimer's disease, dementia, anxiety, depression, ADHD, Autistic Spectrum Disorder, bipolar disorder, eating disorders, and schizophrenia.

The Program included researchers in neuroscience, genetics, epidemiology and clinical research who are devoted to developing treatments, finding the causes, and working out how to prevent these conditions.


The Cellular and Molecular Neurodegeneration Laboratory investigates the cause and potential treatments for brain diseases including dementia (Alzheimer's disease, and childhood dementia), motor neuron disease (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) and other neurodegenerative disorders. These diseases are a growing health issue in Australia and worldwide, with few treatment options available. In order to gain a better understanding of these diseases and develop new therapeutic approaches, the research team is currently developing new human brain cell culture methods for microglia, brain endothelial cells, organoids (mini-brains), and olfactory (nasal) cells. The lab is utilising these new 2D and 3D human brain cell models to understand brain disease pathways, and establish platforms for drug screening to identify potential new therapeutics for treatment of brain diseases.

Role Purpose / Responsibilities:

About you:


To be successful in this role you will have a BSc (Honours) for Research Assistant or a PhD qualification for a Research Officer.


Specific skills/qualities include:

  • Extensive experience in a broad range of molecular biology techniques including (but not limited to) tissue culture, immunofluorescence, realtime PCR, ELISA, DNA/RNA purification, sample analysis via flow cytometry, microscopy are all highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct experiments with mínimal supervision and the ability to adapt to changing priorities.
  • Demonstrated ability to participate in the design, execution and control of research studies and coordinate the processing and analysis of data.
  • Excellent organisational and problem solving skills and an ability to consistently meet deadlines and commitments.
  • A high degree of initiative, decision making ability, and highlydeveloped negotiating skills
  • Excellent attention to detail with meticulous record keeping, and scientific writing skills are essential.

Desirable skillsets

  • Background in neuroimmunology and/or understanding of microglia biology
  • Bioinformatic experience for bulk RNAseq and scRNAseq analysis would be a significant advantage.
  • Experience working with a multidisciplinary team
  • Keen interest in the state of the art equipment trends and active participation to keep abreast of current applicable technologies for research.

Remuneration:
Salary range is $74,397 to $95,329 p.a. plus super and salary packaging. This is a full time appointment for 12 months, with the possibility of extension. This position may also be offered as a part-time role for an experienced applicant on request.
