**About The Transplantation Immunology Laboratory**:
Our research focuses on improving our understanding of the complications which often occur after stem cell transplantation, the gold-standard treatment for high-risk blood cancers. These complications are a major barrier to the success of this immunotherapy and include graft-versus-host disease, infection, prolonged immune cell dysfunction and relapse. We develop unique preclinical models and employ clinical samples together with cutting-edge technologies to unravel complex mechanisms to aid the discovery of new therapeutic targets or biomarkers of disease. The overarching aim of our research is to translate basic research findings into clinical practice with our vision to make this lifesaving, blood cancer treatment, safer and more effective. With strong links to the Bone Marrow Transplantation Unit at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, the opportunity for rapid clinical translation is highly feasible.
The Research Officer will focus primarily on a NHMRC funded project examining the relationship between IgA, gut microbiota and their derivatives during acute graft-versus-host disease of the GI-tract. They will have the opportunity to contribute to other projects in the laboratory and to develop their own research projects independently.
**Role Purpose / Responsibilities**:
Applications are invited for a Research Officer to join the Transplantation Immunology Laboratory.
The following duties will apply:
- Perform experiments, including bone marrow/stem cell transplantation, dissection and cell isolation from animal tissues; analyse data, prepare manuscripts for publication and dissemination of findings through the scientific community (e.g. presentation at conferences)
- Provide assistance with the training and supervision of students and laboratory staff
- Provide assistance with managing Animal and Human Ethics, Safety and OGTR requirements and the ability to ensure those requirements are met
- Ensure work practices comply with the requirements of the Work Health and Safety Act, related legislative requirements and the Institute’s Work Health & Safety (WH&S) policies and procedures
- Model and promote research excellence and integrity, adhering to the highest quality and ethical standards
**About you**:
You are required to:
- Hold a PhD in Immunology/Microbiology, with 1-2 years postdoc experience
- Have an understanding of Transplantation Immunology, Microbiology and/or Cancer Biology
- Demonstrated record of achievement in:
- Experience with animal models of immune diseases for research purposes; bone marrow/stem cell transplantation, breeding, genotyping, animal handling and monitoring, drug administration and tissue sampling
- Effective project management skills, including planning, resource allocation and budget planning; strong organisational skills with ability to prioritise and manage multiple competing tasks and projects with specified time frames; strong communication skills (written and verbal)
- Ability to work independently, high levels of self-motivation and initiative, meticulous attention to detail and ability to work effectively within a team
- High level of analytical and problem-solving skills; experience in rigorous experimental design with proper controls and statistical power; ability to maintain excellent, highly accurate and reliable scientific records
- Experience in multi-parameter flow cytometry and cell sorting, digital PCR, bulk RNA sequencing, cell culture, in vitro functional assays, histology, confocal microscopy
- Experience with grant writing and manuscript preparation for publication
