**Job Description**:
An excellent opportunity is available for a person with to join the Human Research Ethics Committee at Australia’s pre-eminent biomedical research institute.
The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research (Institute) is seeking a new member for its Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) to fulfil the requirement for a man layperson. Under the
National Statement of Ethical Conduct in Human Research
(National Statement) the HREC is required to have at least one at least one person who performs a pastoral care role in a community, for example, an Aboriginal elder, a minister of religion. We are looking for such a person.
As a member of the HREC you are responsible for working with others to decide whether, according to your judgement, research proposals meet the requirement of the National Statement and are ethically acceptable.
The role will attend five HREC meetings each year.
As stipulated under the National Statement the appointee must have no affiliation with the Institute and not be currently engaged in medical, scientific, legal or academic work.
Selection Criteria- A passion for science and ethics.- An ability to listen to and appreciate the views of others, and to formulate and express a considered opinion.- The capacity to understand important ethical issues and how these relate to the National Statement, the Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research (Code) and other relevant legislation or policies.-
- Undertake pre-reading for meetings- Attend HREC meetings- Become familiar with the National Statement- Take responsibility for deciding whether, according to their judgement, a proposal submitted to the HREC meets the requirements of the National Statement and is ethically acceptable.
Meeting information and dates
The core business of each meeting is to review research proposals to ensure they conform to ethical principles, such as those contained in the National Statement. The HREC also discusses emerging ethical issues regarding research and from time to time can make recommendations to the Institute on practices it might adopt to best conform to ethical standards.
The HREC meetings for 2023 will be held in July, September and November. Meetings normally run on Thursdays from 4:00-6:00pm in the level 5 Boardroom at 435 Elizabeth Street. However, options will be available for attending the meeting remotely.
Papers for each meeting are circulated one to two weeks beforehand, and there is an expected commitment of 1-3 hours to read the papers.
