What You'll Do
The Research Assistant (Orchid Conservation) is responsible for supporting the research priorities of the Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria by contributing to the functioning of: the laboratories, orchid seed and mycorrhizal banks and extensive ex-situ nursery conservation collections. A significant part of this position will be the propagation and reintroduction of threatened Australian terrestrial orchid species being managed under Federal Recovery Plans, to the highest standard expected by the scientific community. Research areas will include mycorrhizal ecology and identification using molecular techniques, propagation, pollination ecology and re-introductions. The position is required to work with a vibrant team including staff, research students, volunteers and stakeholders in the field and laboratory to achieve conservation outcomes for threatened flora.
What You'll Bring
The successful applicant will have a minimum of an Honours or Master's degree in science, or a similar tertiary qualification in biological or botanical science, with several post-graduate years technical experience. You will have demonstrated experience in providing excellent-quality research support in a biological sciences research environment, along with experience in planning and conducting high-quality research. You will have excellent communication and written skills, using these to write for scientific publications and journals, support grants and tender preparation and analyse data using relevant software. You can work independently but also alongside other staff and researchers. You can speak confidently with a variety of stakeholders and take a proactive and organised approach to work. Your commitment to improving our collective knowledge on botanical and biological conservation will be clear. You are now looking to join a high-performing team in a fixed-task capacity.
