The position is required to provide high-level technical support to the Laboratory Manager, technical support staff, other relevant staff and students regarding academic teaching and research programs in the School of Medicine. In conjunction with the Laboratory Manager, the position provides a high standard of technical support to teaching and research staff and students and has direct supervisory responsibilities while also ensuring technical services are provided in a timely manner and in accordance with relevant regulations.

**Your key responsibilities will include**:

- Coordinate the School’s teaching and research laboratories to ensure efficient and safe operation and adherence to internal and external regulations and policies, especially regarding chemistry, biosafety, and biosecurity, including delivery of the safety induction program for relevant staff, students, contractors and visitors.
- Provide guidance, expert advice, and training to all stakeholders using laboratory facilities and equipment within the School of Medicine, including outreach and engagement partners, and those undertaking research, teaching and project work at the Geelong Waurn Ponds campus, and external SoM sites as required.
- Provide guidance to the technical staff within the School of Medicine and assist with the effective allocation of staff and physical resources to work areas at the Waurn Ponds campus.
- Assist the Laboratory Manager to manage the requirements for biosafety, including import permits and exports to external overseas research collaborators, provide advice and guidance on biosafety and biosecurity matters to staff and students to meet relevant standards and regulations.
- Provide leadership in Occupational Health and Safety practices including matters relating to biological safety, hazardous materials, and dangerous goods, and recommend changes to work practices, where appropriate, that promote high standards of safety.
- Provide advice and recommendations regarding equipment purchases, including facilitating the acquisition of equipment and materials for teaching and research.
- Identify and implement continuous improvement initiatives to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of laboratory operations, develop and maintain databases of resources while working with colleagues across the locations
- Communicate with confidence using examples and the most appropriate influencing technique for a given situation to increase understanding and support
- Act as a coach and work with team members to facilitate growth and development by giving balanced, constructive feedback considering individual capability and team performance, in alignment with Deakin’s code of conduct and core university strategies and policies that promote a safe, sustainable, and productive working environment.

**To be successful, you’ll have**:

- Degree in a science discipline and technical experience or an equivalent combination of relevant training and technical experience.
- Demonstrated ability to work with and train technical and research staff and students.
- Laboratory technical management or supervisory experience.
- A proven capacity to work effectively both independently and as part of a team in a highly pressured environment.
- Sound knowledge of Deakin University academic, administrative and technical policies, and procedures. *_desirable_
