The position will sit within the Financial Controlling Directorate. The Financial Controlling Directorate drives the delivery of financial control for the Department and drives continuous improvement of the controls process. This team is focuses on driving improved ways of working to deliver meaningful and long-lasting impact. You will be collaborative, courageous, agile, and disciplined about delivering outcomes for the students of NSW.

**About the role**

As part of the Financial Controlling team, you will be responsible for facilitating continuous improvement in financial reporting and internal controls, financial advisory and maintenance of internal and external auditor’s relationships.
- Reporting to the Finance Manager, you will be facilitating the delivery of the Department’s financial statutory reporting function to ensure a high quality of financial reporting and accounting services are delivered with strategic alignment to the department’s organisational objectives.
- Communicate and explain financial statutory reporting issues involving accounting standards to various stakeholders.
- Work closely with other Financial Controlling teams; liaise with finance business partners and business units to drive awareness and understanding of financial statutory reporting changes and issues and provide financial accounting advice per relevant accounting standards, NSW Treasury guidance and Department policies.
- Facilitate the delivery of the Department’s mandatory early-close procedures and statutory annual financial statements, regularly liaising with the Audit Office of NSW; internal and external stakeholders; and NSW Treasury.
- Assist in any ad-hoc reporting requirements or projects.

**About you**
- Thorough knowledge of financial statements and accounting standards
- Familiarity with NSW Treasury mandates and guidelines knowledge (advantageous)
- Experience in providing technical accounting advice to a range of stakeholders
- Exceptional communication skills, both written and oral
- Foundational experience in people management
- Attention to detail, high level of commitment and can-do attitude.

**Essential requirements of the role**
- Membership with a recognised professional accounting body (CA ANZ, CPA, IPA or ACCA) and/or equivalent relevant workplace experience.
- Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the value of public education
- Knowledge of and commitment to the Department's Aboriginal Education policies.

**Key knowledge and experience**
- Experience in financial reporting preparation for large organisations and providing technical accounting advice including preparing accounting papers
- Excellent communication (both written & verbal) and strong relationship building and stakeholder management skills.
- Thorough knowledge and experience of financial accounting processes and practices and statutory compliance, including Australian Accounting Standards with the ability to quickly develop an understanding of the Government Sector Finance Act 2018, New South Wales Treasurer's mandates, policies and guidelines.
- Knowledge of and commitment to implementing the Department’s Aboriginal Education Policy and upholding the Department’s Partnership Agreement with the NSW AECG and to ensure quality outcomes for Aboriginal people.
