**Where you'll be working**
Health Protection NSW works to prevent exposure to, and minimise impact of, infectious and environmental hazards. HPNSW works closely with public health units in local health districts in the development, implementation and evaluation activities to protect public health.
**About this role**
Reporting to the Chief Health Officer, Health Protection NSW is responsible for surveillance and public health response in NSW including monitoring the epidemiology of notifiable infectious diseases and taking appropriate action to prevent, control and minimise the impact of these diseases. It also provides public health advice and response to environmental issues affecting human health.
In collaboration with its key partners, the Communicable Diseases Branch focuses on the strategic response to a range of communicable diseases that are of risk to public health. This includes COVID-19 and other respiratory viral infections, vaccine preventable diseases, tuberculosis, blood borne viruses and sexually transmissible infections. The Branch is also responsible for implementation of the National Immunisation Program in NSW.
The Applied Epidemiologist / Policy Analyst is an Identified Position located in the Communicable Diseases Branch within Health Protection NSW (HPNSW). Aboriginal people are disproportionately impacted by higher rates of poor health outcomes. This role is responsible for providing high-level technical expertise and strategic advice in relation to communicable disease control to address this disparity.
The Applied Epidemiologist / Policy Analyst will use sound epidemiological principles to analyse the impact of prevention and control policies, develop and refine strategies to maximise the outputs of policies programs and provide high-level advice, with a particular focus on ensuring maximal public health outcomes in Aboriginal communities and for Aboriginal people. The position works closely across the Communicable Diseases Branch and other Health Protection branches to develop and implement processes and procedures for state-wide surveillance and reporting to monitor and evaluate current strategies and inform further policy development The position works closely with other Aboriginal staff across the NSW public health network and provides advice to the public health network on best practice approaches to health protection issues for Aboriginal people in NSW. This position will also provide cross-branch advice and may be placed within any Health Protection unit to meet business needs.

**Selection Criteria**
- This is an identified Aboriginal and/ or Torres Strait Islander Position. Applicants must be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent (N.B. an applicant’s race is a genuine occupational qualification and is authorised under Section 14 (d) of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977).
- Postgraduate qualifications in public health, applied epidemiology or related discipline and/or relevant experience.
- Extensive experience in the investigation and control of public health issues; experience in the management of outbreak investigations is desirable.
- Demonstrated skills and experience in policy development and review including the provision of expert policy advice and recommendations on complex public health issues with understanding of how these impact on Aboriginal people and communities in NSW.
- High-level conceptual and analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex information rapidly and accurately.
- Excellent organisational skills, with proven capacity to deliver high quality products within agreed timeframes.
- Strong inter-personal, negotiation and conflict resolution skills, coupled with excellent verbal and written skills.
