**Where you'll be working**
Health Protection NSW works to prevent exposure to, and minimise impact of, infectious and environmental hazards. HPNSW works closely with public health units in local health districts in the development, implementation and evaluation activities to protect public health.

**About this role**
Reporting to the Chief Health Officer, Health Protection NSW (HPNSW) is responsible for surveillance and public health response in NSW including collecting and managing and maintaining data systems for notifiable conditions, monitoring the epidemiology of notifiable conditions and taking appropriate action to prevent, control and minimise the impact of these conditions. It also provides public health advice and response to environmental issues affecting human health.

The Epidemiology, Data and Systems (EDS) Branch focuses on creating and managing sustainable data systems, and provides epidemiological data, information, intelligence and expert advice to support an effective public health response across the Public Health Network and to inform and evaluate public health policy in relation to conditions notifiable under the Public Health Act and emerging conditions of public health importance. The Branch works in close collaboration with Health Protection NSW branches.

The Biostatistician role is located in Health Protection NSW (HPNSW), within the EDS Branch and reports to the Manager, Reporting Analytics. The Biostatistician provides expert statistical advice, analysis and reporting on a diverse range of public health projects, strategies, and issues to contribute to health protection objectives. They are technically adept and will collaborate with epidemiologists and data analysts on the management of complex data management, analysis and reporting.

The Biostatistician will work with teams in EDS and across HPNSW to develop, implement and refine processes and procedures for the collection and management of data to inform and evaluate public health policy. This position may be surged to other Health Protection units to meet business needs.

You may be asked to undertake further assessments as part of the recruitment process for this position, which may include, but is not limited to, psychometric assessment (e.g. personality and cognitive abilities assessments) and/or particular work tasks.

**Selection Criteria**
- Postgraduate qualifications in biostatistics or equivalent experience.
- High level experience in statistical or data analytic methods, using R or equivalent statistical packages, applied to the analysis of population health data.
- High level biostatistical skills, and ability to identify data reporting requirements to support reporting imperatives rapidly and accurately for real-time public health response.
- Ability to self-direct, work under pressure and deliver products within agreed timeframes.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills with demonstrated experience in producing high-quality interpretation of biostatistical methods and outputs.
- Ability to lead a team with demonstrated experience of working effectively with internal and external stakeholders to achieve outcomes.
