This role is situated within the Creative team, which focuses on collection development and interpretation relating to individuals and small-medium production companies in the creative audiovisual industries.
The National Film and Sound Archive (NFSA) is the custodian of Australia’s analogue and born digital national audiovisual collection which contains over 4 million items.
Our mandate is to collect, preserve and share the remarkable story of the Australian audio-visual experience through the creativity and history represented in film, television, radio, recorded sound, augmented reality, online, videogames and associated contextual documentation and ephemera. Our primary focus is on Australian production and Australian related production, but we also address key international influences on our culture.
The NFSA is committed to developing its collection through the representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, as well as those from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
Under general direction undertake the following duties:
- Undertake the full range of accessioning, manual handling and packaging of analogue, born-digital and contextual materials according to the NFSA’s standards and guidelines.
- Actively contribute to the management and acquisition of contemporary Australian audiovisual productions through the funded Deliverables program.
- Contribute towards curatorial projects and acquisition programs in accordance with curatorial policy and practices which includes maintaining relationships with stakeholders, negotiating lodgement of material and processing incoming acquisitions.
- Undertake robust curatorial research and analysis of collection material, including strengths and weaknesses to assist develop targeted acquisition strategies.
- Contribute towards the developing and updating of curatorial and accessioning policies, guidelines, workflows and procedures as required.
- Contribute to the interpretation and presentation of the collection as required.

In relation to the ‘Job Details’ listed above, concisely describe your skills, experience, and achievements against each of the following areas:
- Demonstrated experience in the principles of curatorial practice, including; collection research, curatorial selection processes (as relates to collection acquisition), cataloguing and collection handling, and control of collection materials, with particular reference to analogue and born-digital audiovisual materials.
- Demonstrated effective communication skills for successful negotiation, establishing and maintaining stakeholder relationships, and contributing to the development of policy, guidelines and procedures.
- Ability to undertake robust research and analysis in order to interpret and present NFSA collection material in engaging ways to different audiences.
- Strong organisational skills including the ability to undertake tasks with mínimal supervision, set priorities and to show initiative.
- Ability to deliver results in a collegiate and timely manner as a member of a high‑performing team.
**Desired Skills and Experience**:
- Relevant experience a collecting institution and/or audio-visual industry is desirable. Library, Archive or Museum qualifications and/or other relevant tertiary studies are desirable.
**Eligibility**
To be eligible for this position you must:
- Be an Australian Citizen; and
- Satisfactorily complete an Australian Federal Police National Police Check.
The other eligibility that may be included in a job would also include the following:
- Obtain and maintain an Australian Government Baseline Security Clearance; and
- Obtain and maintain a Working with Vulnerable People registration.
