**The Role**
This role provides an opportunity to perform and achieve complex accounting work within an integrated workforce. The role will require extensive knowledge of and compliance with legislative frameworks, including Australian Accounting Standards, government decision-making and Defence’s mission and policies requirements. As the Director for Asset Accounting you will be responsible for the leadership and management of the Asset Accounting team.

Duties of the position include but are not limited to:

- Leading the teams in meeting Defence’s statutory financial reporting obligations, including the preparation of monthly and annual accounts by implementing and overseeing policies and processes that allow Defence to financially account for its complex asset holding base.
- Detailed monitoring and management of the Defence balance sheet items including asset and inventory balances, roll out of assets under construction and valuation work including impairment analysis.
- Driving the timely and accurate completion of asset accounting activities to support the preparation of the annual financial statements and facilitating the efficient engagement of the Australian National Audit Office (ANAO) on the financial statements audit relating to asset accounting activities.
- Providing strategic level advice on technical accounting matters including the development of accounting policies, position papers, and financial statements risk mitigation strategies.
- Communicating with key stakeholders, including the Chief Finance Officer, First Assistant Secretary - Budgets and Financial Division and oversee the preparation of papers for Defence Audit and Risk Committee.

**About our Team**
The Director Asset Accounting reports to the Executive Director Financial Accounting and Assets who reports directly to the Assistance Secretary Financial Compliance. The Financial Compliance Branch sits within the Budgets and Financial Services Division and supports the Department of Defence by providing a framework of financial policies and advice to support staff in exercising their financial responsibilities. There are a broad range of specialised financial activities undertaken within the Financial Compliance Branch including Financial Reporting and Asset Accounting, Financial Policy, Financial Compliance, Financial Learning, Travel Policy and Tax Management.

The Finance Accounting and Assets Executive Directorate plays a vital role in managing the external financial reporting obligations for Defence. The teams help to ensure that the organisation can provide complete and accurate accounts that withstand audit scrutiny and provides the basis to inform government on Defence financial management.

As a Director, you will operate with considerable independence to deliver and drive the asset reporting function for the Defence organisation. You are a highly experienced finance professional with a strong technical accounting background.
- Experience in managing accounting large and complex fixed assets base;
- Understanding of statutory financial statements;
- Thorough understanding of the linkage between asset accounting and statutory financial statements;
- Experience in development and delivery of high quality technical financial advice;
- Excellent strategic management and leadership skills;
- Proven experience in stakeholder engagement across various cohorts;
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, including attention to detail;
- Ability to prioritise and meet deadlines in a time sensitive environment;
- Results orientated, resilient and a positive approach to issues resolution
