**Principal Policy Officer**

The NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) seeks to appoint a Principal Policy Officer to its Major Projects and Initiatives team that sits within the Regulatory Policy, Initiatives and Advice division. The Principal Policy Officer plays a critical role in understanding complex issues and helping the team to maintain a clear sense of the relationship between the policy objective, the evidence base, and practical implementation issues. The Principal Policy Officer needs to be able to translate an understanding of complex issues into pragmatic policy advice and then drive projects forward to turn that advice into action.

**What you will do**

Reporting to your Unit Head or Manager, you will lead research, analysis, communication, engagement and evaluation activities on important environmental and political issues. You will need to manage competing priorities as well as be able to synthesise and communicate complex information in plain English. As a Principal Policy Officer, you will be comfortable being a role model to reinforce a positive team culture.

You will work across a range of projects that relate to significant environmental policy and regulation issues for NSW, these include implementing major reforms under the NSW Government’s Waste and Sustainable Materials Strategy 2041. Our current portfolio of work covers high-profile projects including reducing problematic plastic waste, designing regulations under the Plastic Reduction and Circular Economy Act 2021, major reform of the NSW resource recovery framework, increasing food and garden organics waste collection, setting standards for managing industrial chemicals, and coordinating whole-of-government work on coal ash repositories. This role provides you with a rare opportunity to contribute to positive intergenerational change.

**Key knowledge and experience**
- Expertise in policy development, implementation and review
- An ability to understand and interpret a variety of legislation
- Knowledge of Cabinet and legislative processes
