**About the team**

SafeWork NSW is the state’s workplace health and safety regulator. Our focus is to reduce work related fatalities, serious injuries, and illnesses by securing compliance with work health and safety and associated legislation and improving the safety culture in NSW workplaces.

The Asbestos and Demolition Services Team (A&D) sits within the Chemicals, Explosives and Safety Systems Directorate of SafeWork NSW and primarily undertakes assessment and verification of asbestos and demolition licence holders and provides technical expertise and guidance to help improve work health and safety (WHS) compliance within the asbestos and demolition industry.

The Team faces many challenges including fraudulent activity, unsafe asbestos removal/and or demolition, lack of knowledge about the risks of exposure to asbestos, lack of specific deterrence over high-risk activity, untrained workers, asbestos legacy and importation issues, and confusion over roles and responsibilities in relation to asbestos amongst government agencies and councils.

Asbestos is a highly emotive issue and often receives strong media and ministerial scrutiny with numerous incidents, complaints and enquiries from the general public and internal stakeholders.

As an Assistant State Inspector in Asbestos & Demolition Services you will be responsible for building industry capability to support the prevention of harm, which includes:

- Providing strong technical expertise and industry knowledge and responding to complex complaints and Requests for Service related to demolition and asbestos removal (for example James Hardie Legacy sites, Loose fill asbestos and high-pressure water blasting incidents).
- Delivery of information and educative advice to internal and external stakeholders and the public
- Assessment and verification of asbestos and demolition licence holders including referrals from other areas of SafeWork, such as the Construction sector.
- Verification of Registered Training Organisations undertaking asbestos related training courses
- Contributing to authorisation programs and policy development and review of demolition and asbestos licensing
- Assisting with the implementation of initiatives developed through the NSW Asbestos Coordination Committee
- Extensive stakeholder engagement including Chairing of the Demolition and Asbestos Consultative Committee and participating in cross-jurisdictional and National Working Groups and Committees
- Work collaboratively with the leadership group to translate strategic direction into operational goals.
- Assist in the conduct of investigations into causes of workplace incidents, injuries and fatalities involving dangerous goods or explosives and where required, provide specialist advice regarding compliance with WHS and Explosives legislation.
- Where necessary, you may be involved in court processes, including the preparation of court documents, attending court, and participating in evidentiary processes.

To be successful, you will have:

- To undertake a minimum of ten units of competency from the Advanced Diploma of Government (Workplace Inspection) within 12 months of completing the Diploma in Government (Workplace Inspection)
- Equivalent relevant qualifications and experience in work health and safety and relevant industry experience i.e. statutory investigations, or the administration of regulatory frameworks
- Strong communication skills to engage and influence key stakeholders to improve regulatory outcomes
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
- Well established resilience skills and the ability to work collaboratively within a diverse team
- High level written communication skills and an ability to understand comprehensive and/or technical reports
- Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities in a timely manner
- Solid knowledge and use of technology
