**About us**

SafeWork NSW is the state’s workplace health and safety regulator, one of a number of regulators within the Better Regulation Division of Department of Customer Service.

The Health & Safe Design Directorate comprises a number of Inspectors and project staff across various specialist areas including engineering, ergonomics, workplace health (including psychological health) and return to work. The Directorate has recently realigned teams along functional areas including strategic programs, specialist services, interventions and program support.

The Directorate provides specialist regulatory advice and intervention to prevent physical and psychological harm associated with work, plant and the working environment. We do this by building internal and external capability, ensuring regulatory compliance with the work health and safety legislation and providing technical leadership influencing the state and national agenda.

**About the role**

This is one of three Specialist Manager roles within the new eight (8) person Health & Safe Design leadership group with responsibility to develop and deliver on our strategic and regulatory priorities as outlined in the legislation and the SafeWork NSW and Australian WHS strategy. The Health & Safe Design Directorate has recently been realigned into functional teams working collaboratively together to deliver on the specialist portfolio for SafeWork NSW.
As the specialist Manager for Engineering you will lead a team of specialist inspectors across all disciplines of plant and engineering technical skills including but not limited too electrical, civil, structural, mechanical and process safety.

Working closely with the strategic programs, interventions, and program support functions they will proactively drive improved regulatory outcomes for NSW workplaces including providing technical advice and expertise on field Inspections and throughout regulatory investigations, building internal and external capability and driving NSW and Australian regulatory policy in our fields of expertise.

You will also play an active role in the leadership team contributing to strategic and operational decisions, leading and sponsoring programs/projects of work aligned to the broad health and safe design portfolio for SafeWork NSW. There is an expectation that you will support the after hours duty roster on an occasional basis.

**About you**
This opportunity would suit an enthusiastic and agile leader committed to reducing harm in the workplace. A highly skilled people leader, who works well within a team and can shift between strategic thinking and operational planning and implementation of highly technical, legislative based specialist areas.

Leading a team of highly skilled and experienced Engineers, you would ideally have background, experience or knowledge in high risk plant or equipment or worked in industries experienced with engineering (construction, manufacturing, aviation for example). You must be comfortable reading, reviewing and interpreting technical reports, standards or codes of practice, critiquing engineering plans and developing policy or legislation to drive regulatory outcomes.
- Managing resources to ensure delivery of exemplar regulatory services and programs that are consistent, professional, customer centric, and evidence informed in line with organisational direction and relevant legislation, policies and procedures
- Contributing as a part of the Health and Safe Design leadership team to the strategic and operational direction of the business to ensure the activities of the business unit align with organisational objectives and meet the needs of NSW businesses and industry stakeholders
- Identifying emerging WHS issues and industry trends and initiate action to address identified risks and ensure best practice, innovative interventions and guidance material are delivered
- Fostering and maintaining professional working relationships with key internal and external stakeholders including those across the Better Regulation Division, other State and Territory jurisdictions, industry unions and associations to facilitate desired outcomes and achieve business unit objectives
