Overview

Position Title: Upper GIT Surgery - Post-Graduate Fellow (Cunningham Fellowship) at St Vincent's Health Australia.

About the role

Employment Type: Temporary for 12 months, Part Time. Hours per week: 0.5 FTE. Department: Upper GIT Surgery. The position is part time in the public hospital; there is potential exposure to private work in the clinical year. The successful candidate will gain experience in upper GI surgery including oesophagogastric, HPB, and bariatric surgery, with advancement in laparoscopic techniques and some exposure to robotic surgery. Some duties may include involvement with the Acute Surgical Unit and collaboration with the Director Medical Services and Director of Surgical Training. There are opportunities to participate in surgical skill courses and clinical/basic research, with potential for a Conjoint Academic appointment (no remuneration attached to the university appointment).

Responsibilities

• Gain experience in upper GI surgery, including oesophagogastric, HPB, bariatric, advanced laparoscopic, and some robotic procedures.
• Support and coordinate registrars in surgical specialty departments in collaboration with the Director Medical Services and the Director of Surgical Training.
• Participate in surgical skill courses, clinical and basic research opportunities.
• Potentially contribute to the Acute Surgical Unit and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Selection Criteria

• Personal integrity and commitment to the Philosophy, Mission and Values of Mary Aikenhead Ministries and St Vincent's Health Australia.
• Possess or be eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
• Possess Fellowship of the RACS in General Surgery or equivalent as provided for in the Health Insurance Act 1997 and the Staff Specialists (NSW) Award or have completed advanced surgical training intending to sit for the fellowship exam in 2025.
• Evidence of Continuing Medical Education and self-monitoring/audit practices consistent with the scope of practice requirements of the position.
• Sound clinical knowledge in Upper GI Surgery demonstrated through clinical practice and participation in quality assurance activities relevant to the specialty.
• High level interpersonal and communication skills and ability to work within a multidisciplinary team.
• Commitment to teaching and junior medical staff supervision consistent with contemporary supervision standards.
• Demonstrates professional behavior suitable for a Senior Medical practitioner and acts as a positive role model for junior staff.
• Demonstrated eligibility to undertake the role within the NSW health system and adherence to applicable policies.
