Our highly valued client is a federal government agency. They are seeking an EL1 level Digital Accessibility Specialist to join a close-knit team supporting experience design for the development of a suite of accessible digital products.
- Hobart location plus hybrid work-from-home
- 12 month initial contract + 12 month extension, rates fully negotiable
- Role only open to Australian Citizens - Federal government client
The role:
As an EL1 Digital Accessibility Specialist, your role will be focused on the research, design, and development phases of the product lifecycle. While accessibility testing is part of this role, your main focus will be on accessible digital product design and development. Your duties will include:
- Developing prototypes of screens and components using web technologies (code snippets) to evaluate and demonstrate design concepts and accessibility support
- Supporting user researchers, developers, and designers in creating world-class accessible digital products and systems across all phases of the product lifecycle
- Reviewing prototypes with designers to identify content and visual design-related accessibility issues early in development
- Providing high-quality, accurate, and timely advice on user behaviour, digital accessibility, and assistive technologies to stakeholders
- Contributing to usability testing with people with disabilities, including NDIA staff and NDIS participants
- Advocating for accessibility-first digital product and system design throughout the Agency
- Leading accessibility-related design and development work, collaborating with analysts, product owners, developers, testers, and project managers across multiple projects
- Identifying opportunities for process improvements and liaising with teams to implement enhancements
- Maintaining documentation, processes, and decisions to support knowledge transfer and future improvements
Skills and experience:
To succeed in this role, you will need:
- Significant experience working in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary team delivering high-quality accessibility outputs
- Knowledge of ARIA, WAI documentation, and how ARIA can be used in complex UI design and development
- A detailed understanding of WCAG guidelines, their interpretation, limitations, and application
- Understanding of how people with disabilities use digital products, including familiarity with assistive technologies such as screen readers, magnifiers, speech-to-text, and accessibility features
- Knowledge of interaction and content design principles, industry trends, and web technologies like browsers, system architectures, and assistive tech
- A passion for inclusive design and a collaborative approach to communicating accessibility requirements
- Basic skills in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, or related front-end frameworks/libraries
- Strong attention to detail and ability to deliver high-quality outputs under pressure
- Excellent communication skills to present complex ideas clearly and persuasively to diverse audiences
