Administration Support Officer - Office for Autism

The Office for Autism, part of the Department for Premier and Cabinet in South Australia, is a pioneering initiative dedicated to improving outcomes for Autistic individuals and autism communities. With a strong focus on inclusion, connection, and opportunity, the Office collaborates with government agencies and partners to deliver the State Autism Strategy and Autism Inclusion Charter.

Guided by lived experience and community needs, their work includes impactful programs such as the Autism Works in the Community Grants Program and the South Australian Inklings Pilot Program. Passionate about fostering understanding and breaking down barriers, the Office for Autism is committed to creating a South Australia where individuals can thrive, families feel supported, and communities are empowered to embrace diversity.

The Department for Premier and Cabinet is looking for a dedicated Administration Support Officer to join the team in the Office for Autism. This role will provide unique exposure to the Government sector, supporting the Director of the Office of Autism and working in a department that collaborates closely with the Minister's office. This is a 12-Month Fixed Term contract, working Full-time Monday to Friday in an excellent Adelaide CBD location, with modern corporate offices, where collaboration, inclusion, and continuous improvement are valued.

Reporting to the Director and working closely with the Principal Policy and Project Officer, this role is responsible for managing the workflow of correspondence, including drafting and formatting official communications, and ensuring timely responses. The role also oversees the Director's diary and the Office for Autism inbox, supporting efficient scheduling, prioritisation, and communication flow.

This is a great opportunity for someone with strong organisational skills who is looking to build experience in the public sector. You'll contribute to inclusive initiatives, support the smooth operation of a purpose-driven office, and build relationships with stakeholders across government. The successful candidate will be responsive, professional, and committed to maintaining a positive and collaborative team culture.

What you'll do:

  • Manage office correspondence and enquiries-including Ministerial communications and the Office for Autism inbox-by reviewing, drafting, and triaging items to ensure timely, professional, and appropriate responses. This includes preparing draft content, reviewing correspondence prepared by other team members to ensure it meets required standards, and escalating for approval as needed.
  • Maintain the Director's diary, prioritising appointments and supporting efficient scheduling and communication flow
  • Provide general administrative support, including records management, invoice processing, and event support
  • Build and maintain effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including across government and community sectors
  • Contribute to process improvements by reviewing and updating administrative procedures
  • Support project delivery by completing assigned tasks under the guidance of senior staff

The ideal candidate for this position will demonstrate professionalism, coupled with a proactive and dynamic approach. A strong background in administration in a professional environment is essential. This opportunity is particularly well-suited for a recent graduate eager to launch their career in the Public Sector.

What you bring:

  • Proven experience in administration with strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
  • Tertiary qualifications in business administration, public policy, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Sound judgement and the ability to recognise when to escalate issues, prioritise competing demands, and respond appropriately to sensitive or time-critical matters.
  • Excellent written communication skills for drafting polished documents.
  • Warm interpersonal skills to foster positive connections internally and externally.
  • Familiarity with digital record-keeping systems and financial processes like invoice management will be highly advantageous
  • Enthusiasm for learning, adaptability, and inclusivity toward diverse communities-including Autistic individuals.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism with all stakeholders is essential
  • Strong knowledge of the Microsoft Suite and ability to learn new systems quickly
  • Must have or be willing to apply for a National Police Check.

The Department for Premier and Cabinet is committed to fostering an inclusive culture where diversity is celebrated and every contribution matters. The Office for Autism leads state-wide initiatives that champion belonging, connection, and opportunity for Autistic individuals. With access to training opportunities, supportive leadership, and exposure to high-profile projects, this is more than just a job-it's purpose-driven work that makes South Australia more inclusive.
