Position Classification:Aboriginal Health Worker
Location: Wonnarua/Wanaruah Country | Muswellbrook
Hours Per Week:38
Requisition ID:REQ596588
Applications Close: Sunday, 31st August 2025

This is a position identified for Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people on the basis of a genuine occupational qualification under section 14(d) of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977. Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander applicants must demonstrate Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander status in addition to addressing the selection criteria.

Applicants must be female - under Section 31 (2) (h) of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977.

Where you'll be working:
The successful applicant will be based with the Kuunarr Aboriginal Maternal and Infant Health Service (AMIHS), located at Muswellbrook Hospital Maternity Unit on Wonnarua/Wanaruah Country. The service provides care across a wide region, from Singleton in the south to Merriwa in the west and Murrurundi in the north, offering a continuity of care model for pregnant women and their families.

Kuunarr also partners with Ungooroo Aboriginal Corporation in Singleton, delivering an antenatal outpatient clinic in a culturally safe and supportive environment. As highlighted in our service brochure, "Didja know that having health workers who you can get to know and trust can help you have a more positive experience during your pregnancy?" This reflects the heart of our approach - building trust, relationships, and positive experiences for women and families.

You will be joining a small, inclusive and supportive team who live the CORE values of the health service and are passionate about walking alongside families on their pregnancy journey.

About the role:
In this role, you will be part of a rural health service that supports pregnant women and their families throughout the antenatal and postnatal journey. Working alongside a Registered Midwife and within a multidisciplinary team, you will play a vital role in providing culturally safe and supportive care to women and families, many of whom may be vulnerable. Your contribution will help foster trust, strengthen connections, and support efforts to Close the Gap in health outcomes.

This is a full-time position based at the Muswellbrook Maternity Unit. A typical day may include coordinating appointments with the Midwife, offering cultural support, arranging or participating in community events such as NAIDOC Week celebrations, and joining home visits with the Midwife to provide care during the antenatal and postnatal period.

In this role, you will be well-supported by a Registered Midwife, your Line Midwife Manager, and the Health Services Manager. You will receive a thorough orientation program, along with access to mandatory training through My Health Learning and additional face-to-face education to meet your professional development needs. Ongoing support is provided through regular monthly ward meetings with Midwives and educators, ensuring you feel connected, guided, and confident in your role.

About you:
We are looking for a compassionate and motivated applicant with strong communication skills, basic computer skills, and a current driver's licence. You will be confident engaging with the community and able to provide a vital cultural bridge between women, families, and health services. Your role will include advocating for families, making referrals to NGOs and health support services, and promoting health education through storytelling and visual aids. An understanding of the social determinants of health and a commitment to supporting women and families in culturally safe ways are essential.

Requirements:

  • Holds or aspires to hold a minimum Certificate III qualification in Aboriginal Primary Health Care or a minimum Certificate III health qualification in the area of care in which the Aboriginal Health Worker works.
  • Eligible to drive in NSW and the ability to travel as required.
