Our team

This role sits within the Technical and Engineering Team and is responsible for contributing high level electronic, communications, power systems and instrumentation advice and functions to the organisation. The Field Operations and Engineering Section (FOES) delivers innovative technical, engineering and field support services and advice across Geoscience Australia land and marine field projects, including priority programs and mission critical activities.

The role

The primary purpose of this role is to provide technical support to the real time earth monitoring data systems that make up the National Observatory Networks operated by Geoscience Australia. These networks consist of seismic, hydroacoustic, infrasound and geomagnetic monitoring stations located around Australia, its territories and neighbouring pacific regions. Data from these stations are fed back into Geoscience Australia and are the base from which earthquake, nuclear testing and geomagnetic monitoring functions operate. These monitoring functions are critical in contributing to the community safety of Australia and its neighbouring regions. You will also provide advice and support within your area of expertise to other projects being undertaken across Geoscience Australia including assistance to international partners. This role works closely with key internal and external stakeholders and requires a high level of communication skills to report and manage technical issues to stakeholders and clients and deliver mission critical activities within Geoscience Australia.

In this role you will:

  • provide expert technical set up, installation and advice on the instruments, systems and equipment that make up the observatory monitoring networks.
  • solve complex technical issues across the Observatory Monitoring Networks and provide expert technical advice and assistance to team members.
  • undertake regular periods of travel for periods up to 3 weeks, including weekends and after hours; to conduct site installs and repairs and maintenance to seismic monitoring infrastructure. Travel includes remote areas of Australia and may include regions of the Pacific region and Antarctic Territories for longer periods.
  • carry out physically demanding work including in what can be extreme weather environments.
  • assist in monitoring of network stations and remotely resolve outages from Geoscience Australia headquarters.
  • provide innovative solutions to modernising and improving the observatory network stations and systems.
  • maintain technical knowledge and continue to develop knowledge and expertise in various aspects of electronic, communications and power system processes.
  • engage and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders both technical and non-technical to ensure timely delivery of observatory monitoring functions and represent the agency in a professional manner.
  • adhere to and promote safety for both field and office environments.
  • complete required documentation to record site visits, maintenance and repair work, update site documents including schematics to reflect any site and system upgrades or changes.
  • provide logistical support for field operations.
  • undertake procurement in accordance with requirements of the Public Governance, Performance and Accountability Act 2013
  • Support the technical engineering team leader and contribute as a proactive member of a high performing multidisciplinary team.

Required skills, knowledge, experience and/or qualifications
  • certificate lll in electronics and communications are highly desirable.
  • expertise in development, construction, operation, and maintenance of seismic monitoring systems is highly desirable.
  • experience working with low voltage DC, solar and mains power is highly desirable.
  • experience in communication systems and ICT networking is highly desirable.
  • experience in scientific instruments is highly desirable.
  • experience and/or qualifications in the design, test, manufacture, install and repair of electrical and electronic equipment is highly desirable.
