About The Service
The Medicare Mental Health Services are free and you do not need an appointment, referral or Medicare card to visit a Medicare Mental Health Centre. The new services in Devonport, Burnie and Outer Hobart are co-funded by the Australian and Tasmanian Governments, to provide a streamlined approach to support better mental health and social wellbeing across the country.
The service is tailored to the needs of the community in Tasmania and provides a combination of peer-integrated recovery and clinical support.
The Medicare Mental Health Centre provides a safe, welcoming and supportive environment for people experiencing psychological distress, allowing them to:
- Identify alternatives to presenting to the Emergency Department
- Access support from trained mental health professionals within their community, outside a clinical setting
- Based in Burnie, TAS
- Permanent, Part time (0.5FTE) opportunity available
- Paying on HPSS Level 3 (above award payment for highly experienced clinicians) plus Super
- Salary Packaging options (up to $15,899 tax free)

- Deliver quality psychosocial assessment, low-intensity brief intervention treatment and evaluation
- Brief Intervention Model of care; up to 6 sessions for mild-moderate, short term, goal orientated focused psychological therapy and generalist counselling.
- Participate as a member of the Medicare Mental Health Centre clinical team in providing comprehensive mental health assessment, case coordination, intervention or group work as required; with specific responsibility to provide Brief Interventions
- Complete Intake Assessments as required
- Must have one of the following: General or Provisional AHPRA registration as a Psychologist, Clinical Psychologist, Mental Health Occupational Therapist OR Mental Health Nurse OR AASW registration as an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker
- Demonstrated a comprehensive level of knowledge, expertise and skill; specifically, Brief Intervention Models of Care Commitment to professional development and willingness to participate in a continuous learning environment
- Well-developed judgment and evaluation skills demonstrating a working understanding assessment and care planning
- Sound understanding of the public, non-government and private mental health systems and programs and associated non-mental health programs in a community setting
- Ideally demonstrated experience in providing alcohol and other drugs (AOD) counselling and support
- Demonstrated interpersonal skills showing an ability and sensitivity to work with people who have or are at risk of developing a mental illness
- Proven ability to work creatively, collaboratively and effectively as a member of a team
- Demonstrated skills in organisation and time-management, including the ability to work under pressure and balance multiple tasks
- Excellent verbal communication and writing skills
- Must be eligible to apply/currently hold a WWCC
- Must hold/be willing to apply for NDIS worker screening clearance
