About the Role

James Cook University (JCU) is seeking a dedicated Laboratory and Technical Support Assistant to join our Bioresources team. In this role, you'll provide high-quality technical support and animal care, enabling researchers and students to achieve outstanding academic and project outcomes across the University.

You'll play a vital part in maintaining disease-free animal facilities, supporting research and teaching needs, and ensuring compliance with safety, hygiene, and welfare standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver daily animal husbandry with care and attention, ensuring the health and welfare of genetically modified mice.
  • Support researchers and students by delivering reliable technical assistance in line with procedures and standards.
  • Keep our teaching and research facilities safe, clean, and fully operational through effective maintenance, sterilisation, and waste management.
  • Contribute to a positive safety culture by enhancing standard operating procedures, reporting hazards, and ensuring compliance with workplace health and safety standards.
About You

You're a team player who is also confident working independently. You take pride in supporting others and understand the importance of safety, precision, and care in a research environment.

Essential:

  • Experience in animal facilities or research laboratories, with knowledge of relevant equipment and basic understanding of animal ethics and research processes.
  • Strong problem-solving and organisational skills, with the ability to work both independently and in a team.
  • Effective written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills, with a customer-focused approach.
  • Not have as pets, or come in contact with mice, rats, snakes or guinea pigs.

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of the Australian Code of Practice for the care and use of animals for scientific purposes.
