Southern Gulf NRM - About Us
Southern Gulf NRM is a not-for-profit community-based organization responsible for planning and implementing sustainable Natural Resource Management (NRM) in the southern Gulf of Carpentaria region of North West Queensland. It is governed by a Board of Directors under the Corporations Act 2001 and its Constitution.
The Southern Gulf region covers 215,000 square kilometres, including the catchments of the Flinders-Cloncurry, Leichhardt, Gregory-Nicholson Rivers, Settlement Creek, Morning Inlet, and the Wellesley Islands.
Programs are delivered collaboratively with stakeholders such as landholders, government agencies, industry groups, Traditional Owners, and conservation groups.
Position Purpose
The NRM Project Officer develops and implements programs to achieve natural resource management outcomes aligned with the Southern Gulf NRM Plan. The focus includes environment and heritage outcomes, property plans, land condition monitoring, education, awareness, adult learning, and on-ground projects across the region.
The programs will support the priorities outlined in the Southern Gulf Regional NRM Plan.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Manage natural resource management projects, including budgeting, monitoring, evaluation, and reporting.
- Build and maintain partnerships with industry, government, community, and Traditional Owners to develop and deliver projects.
- Identify funding opportunities and prepare applications to support NRM initiatives.
- Stay informed on policy and land management practices, providing advice on emerging issues.
- Contribute positively to the organization's management and administration.
Selection Criteria
- Qualifications or experience in Agricultural or Environmental Science or related fields.
- Knowledge of natural resource management principles, especially weed and pest management.
- Experience in industry extension and capacity building within agriculture and land management sectors.
- Strong organizational skills for managing multiple projects and deadlines.
- Excellent communication skills, including the ability to convey complex concepts and utilize social media.
- Initiative, ability to work independently and in teams, and focus on quality outcomes.
- Ability to develop projects, seek funding, and collaborate with partners.
- Understanding of monitoring and evaluation, GIS mapping, and MERI systems is desirable.
- Experience in remote, rangeland natural resource management is highly desirable.
Additional Factors
The role requires initiative, independence, and a broad knowledge of natural resource management principles, with specific competencies relevant to the region. Travel is required, including remote areas, with four-wheel drive experience advantageous.
Employment Conditions
This full-time position (38 hours/week) is based in Mt Isa.
