About the role - Staying on Track

Anglicare Southern Queensland is proud to deliver the Staying on Track Program in a number of regions including Brisbane South, Brisbane North, Sunshine Coast, Ipswich / Inala and Toowoomba. The Staying on Track Programs are part of the Queensland Government\'s Making Queensland Safe plan funded by the Qld Department of Youth Justice and Victim Support. The purpose of the Staying On Track (SoT) program is to improve community safety and reduce reoffending by bridging the transition to the community when young people are released from detention to help youth offenders turn their lives away from crime. Anglicare works in partnership with the Department of Youth Justice to ensure every young person will have a plan tailored to meet the assessed risks, needs and level of response required and focus on reducing the risk of reoffending by supporting them to prepare for a productive future in employment and community life. This role involves active outreach across the community, the courts, detention centres, and watchhouses.

We are seeking committed and compassionate Mentors, Youth Justice to join our team on a permanent, part-time basis based at Nambour (Sunshine Coast).

As a Mentor, you will work directly with young people aged 10 to 17 who are involved with the youth justice system. Helping them to overcome offending behaviours, build resilience, and re-engage positively with their families and communities. You will play an active role in delivering practical mentoring, group work, and culturally responsive support that promotes wellbeing, independence, and community safety. Responsibilities
  • Establish and maintain positive, consistent, and supportive relationships with young people to encourage trust, engagement, and personal growth
  • Provide trauma-informed, culturally safe, and mentoring support tailored to individual needs
  • Assist young people in successfully transitioning from detention to community life, supporting engagement with family, education, employment, and housing
  • Implement mentoring interventions that improve wellbeing, reduce offending, and build pro-social behaviours
  • Use the Five Ps framework to connect young people with culturally appropriate services, programs, and community networks
  • Collaborate with key stakeholders including Youth Justice, Queensland Police, Child Safety, and community services to support service delivery and shared outcomes
  • Participate in case planning meetings with young people and families, ensuring their voices are heard and goals are achievable
  • Maintain accurate and timely records and documentation to meet contractual, legislative, and organisational requirements
  • Promote health, safety, and wellbeing in all operational practices including WHS requirements
  • Undertake other duties as delegated by your line manager, aligned with your role and capabilities
Qualifications, Credentials and Other Requirements
  • Certificate IV in Youth Work, Youth Justice, Child Youth and Family Intervention, Human Services, or similar (Essential)
  • Current Blue Card (Working with Children Check)
  • Current National Police Check
  • Queensland Driver licence
  • Willingness and ability to travel within the service region
  • Willingness and ability to work flexible hours including after-hours and weekends
About You
  • Demonstrated ability to provide client centred support including mentoring and practical interventions that support positive behavioural change
  • Strong understanding of the youth justice system and the challenges faced by young people transitioning from detention
  • Experience working with culturally and linguistically diverse communities with a commitment to cultural safety and inclusivity
  • Critical decision-making skills with the ability to assess risk and respond appropriately in complex or high-pressure situations
  • Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to build respectful relationships and engage effectively with young people and their families
  • Confident in managing boundaries and crucial conversations to support accountability and personal growth
  • Proficient in using reporting tools and systems to manage documentation and service data effectively
  • Committed to continuous learning, supervision, and reflective practice
