Technical Superintendent – Harbour TowageApply locations Melbourne Local Office time type Full time posted on Posted 10 Days Ago time left to apply End Date: August 15, 2025 (3 days left to apply) job requisition id JR2770About Us
At Svitzer Australia, we play a vital role in keeping trade moving safely and efficiently. With more than 50,000 vessel movements handled each year across Australia and Papua New Guinea, we're proud to support port and terminal operations through reliable, responsive harbour towage services.
As part of a global marine leader, we prioritise safety, collaboration, and operational excellence in everything we do. Right now, we're looking for a Technical Superintendent to help lead our Victorian fleet across Port Melbourne, Westernport and Geelong.
Whether you're an experienced marine engineer ready to come ashore, or already in a shore-based superintendent role, this is a great opportunity to lead technical operations while staying close to the vessels and people that make the job matter.
Why join Svitzer?
This is a key leadership role where your engineering expertise and operational mindset will directly impact vessel reliability, safety, and performance. You'll enjoy a mix of office-based planning and hands-on engagement with our crews and vessels across our Victorian operations. Working closely with the Port Manager and our national technical team, you'll help shape our technical approach while solving real-world challenges.
We're open to supporting relocation for the right candidate.
What You'll Be Doing
Reporting into the local Port Manager, you'll be responsible for:
Providing technical guidance on fleet condition and vessel availability
Overseeing planned maintenance and procurement systems, and supporting day-to-day crew management
Preparing dry-docking specs, setting maintenance budgets, and monitoring spend
Planning maintenance schedules, labour needs, and work programs in partnership with the team
Ensuring all vessels meet survey and compliance obligations
Managing stores, spare parts, and local procurement
Coordinating repairs, inspections, and equipment supply to align with operational requirements
What We're Looking For
To thrive in this role, you should have:
Marine engineering experience, ideally supported by a maritime or trade qualification
Experience leading engineering teams and coordinating external service contractors
Strong technical knowledge of diesel engines, power generation, propulsion and hydraulics
Familiarity with classification societies and vessel compliance and certification processes.
A proactive, solution-focused mindset with strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
Initiative and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Competency with MS Office and a foundational understanding of network hardware and system architecture.
A willingness to travel to port locations as required to meet operational needs.
Building a Diverse Workplace
In Svitzer we value the diversity of our talent and will always strive to recruit the best person for the job – we value diversity in all its forms, including but not limited to gender, age, nationality, race, sexual orientation, disability, or religious beliefs. We are proud of our diversity and see it as a genuine source of strength for building high performing teams.
Don't meet every single requirement?Studies have shown that members from some under-represented groups are less likelyto apply for jobs if they don't meet every single qualification. At Svitzer we are dedicated to building a diverse and inclusive workplace, so if you're excited about this role but your past experience doesn't align perfectly with every qualification in the job description, we encourage you to apply anyway. You may be just the right candidate for this or other roles, and we are excited about hearing from you
