Overview

Start your career in carpentry - maintenance & repair. As a Carpentry Apprentice, you'll learn the trade through hands-on maintenance and repairs—not building new structures—but keeping our city's assets safe, functional and in working order. This role is based at the Oak Flats Services Depot and reports to the Team Coordinator, Building Maintenance.

You will complete a Certificate III in Carpentry course at Shellharbour TAFE to gain practical knowledge and skills related to the presentation of our city. This opportunity is open to school leavers, mature age applicants and/or those who have already commenced their Certificate III in Carpentry.

Please note: This opportunity is dependent upon external funding confirmation. Successful applicants will commence in January 2026 based on funding being confirmed.

Responsibilities
  • Support the Building Maintenance team with repair and maintenance tasks, including repairing doors, windows and fixtures, replacing damaged timber, installation and repair of parkland furniture & equipment, fencing, minor concreting works, and using hand and power tools.
  • Read and follow maintenance plans; work safely in occupied buildings.
  • Contribute to the preparation and presentation of the city through on-the-job and off-the-job training during the apprenticeship.
Program and Benefits
  • Temporary full-time up to 4 years (or for the duration of the apprenticeship)
  • 38 hours per week with access to a 9 Day Fortnight
  • Salary range from $601.70 per week (16 years old) to $827.40 per week (18 years and over)
  • Plus 12% superannuation
  • On-the-job training
  • Compulsory course costs paid by Council
  • Approved leave to attend TAFE
