Join to apply for the Apprentice Maintenance Carpenter role at Shellharbour City Council

As a Carpentry Apprentice, you'll learn the trade through hands-on maintenance and repairs - not building new structures - but keeping our city's assets safe, functional and in working order.

Supporting the Building Maintenance team, you will gain practical skills such as repairing doors, windows and fixtures, replacing damaged timber, installation and repair of parkland furniture & equipment, fencing, minor concreting works, using hand and power tools, reading maintenance plans and safely work in occupied buildings.

This role is based at our Oak Flats Services Depot and reports to the Team Coordinator, Building Maintenance.

Programme and eligibility

You will complete a Certificate III in Carpentry course at Shellharbour TAFE to gain and develop practical knowledge and skills associated with the presentation of our city. This opportunity is open to school leavers, mature age applicants and/or those who have already commenced their Certificate III in Carpentry.

Please note: This opportunity is dependent upon external funding confirmation. Successful applicants will commence in January 2026 based on funding being confirmed.

About the apprenticeship

This is more than a trade... Our apprenticeships cover theoretical & practical requirements of on the job and off the job training. After completing your apprenticeship you will have formal qualifications with four years of practical experience with ability to gain additional skills across our maintenance and city presentation teams.

CAT Program

Council's Cadet, Apprentice and Trainee (CAT) Program aims to grow Council's skilled workforce capacity by creating job opportunities and a talent pipeline for specialised roles and to develop future leaders by providing employment opportunity and professional development experiences that support and complement a related course of external tertiary study. Council's cadets, apprentices or trainees receive ongoing training, guidance and support from workplace mentors while completing a nationally recognised qualification.
