Overview

Start your career in carpentry - maintenance & repair As a Carpentry Apprentice, you'll learn the trade through hands-on maintenance and repairs to keep our city's assets safe, functional and in working order. This role is based at Oak Flats Services Depot and reports to the Team Coordinator, Building Maintenance. You will complete a Certificate III in Carpentry course at Shellharbour TAFE to gain practical knowledge and skills related to the city's presentation. This opportunity is open to school leavers, mature age applicants and/or those who have already commenced their Certificate III in Carpentry.

CAT Program Council's Cadet, Apprentice and Trainee (CAT) Program aims to grow Council's skilled workforce capacity by creating job opportunities and a talent pipeline for specialised roles and to develop future leaders by providing employment opportunities and professional development experiences that support and complement a related course of external tertiary study. Cadets, apprentices or trainees receive ongoing training, guidance and support from workplace mentors while completing a nationally recognised qualification.

Responsibilities
  • Learn the trade through hands-on maintenance and repairs (not building new structures).
  • Repair doors, windows and fixtures; replace damaged timber.
  • Install and repair parkland furniture & equipment; fencing; minor concreting works.
  • Use hand and power tools; read maintenance plans; work safely in occupied buildings.
Requirements and Training
  • Certificate III in Carpentry course at Shellharbour TAFE (on-the-job and off-the-job training).
  • Open to school leavers, mature age applicants, or those who have already commenced the Certificate III in Carpentry.
  • Pre-placement Medical examination is required.
  • General Construction Induction Card (White Card) prior to commencement.

Please note: This opportunity is dependent upon external funding confirmation. Successful applicants will commence in January 2026 based on funding being confirmed.

Rewards and Benefits

  • Temporary Full time up to 4 years (or for the duration of the apprenticeship) with 38 hours per week and a 9 Day Fortnight.
  • Salary range from listed figures; on-the-job training; compulsory course costs paid by Council.
