Overview

Maritime Safety Queensland is seeking a temporary Business Officer (Tides) to join its hydrographic services and tides team until 6 February 2026 with possible extension. The team is responsible for jointly operating, with other government agencies, the tide gauge network around the Queensland coast, coordinating the validation and archiving of tidal readings and producing a variety of predictions for public and commercial use. As Business Officer (Tides), you will support the completion of datasets and delivery of publications that are essential for safety of navigation, emergency response, and supporting commercial shipping operations.

Responsibilities
  • Accurately validate and store tidal recordings and associated tidal station information in the Tides database.
  • Support the production of the Queensland tide tables for publication.
  • Work as part of a small team and liaise with a range of internal and external stakeholders to ensure efficient operations of the unit.
  • Assist with the provision of tide predictions, advice and information relating to tidal information to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Assist with maintaining and updating the MSQ tide manuals and policies.
  • Arrange archiving of tidal and hydrographic data and projects, in accordance with document management processes.
  • Provide support for testing and enhancement of the Tides database.
  • Assist the Senior Advisor (POVTS) with broader administrative support.
  • Assist with development and coordination of reviews to maintain currency of workplace health and safety (WH&S) documentation, including safe work method statements (SWMS), vessel safety management systems (SMS), safety plans and risk assessments of hydrographic storage rooms.
  • Maintain the hydrographic survey equipment inventory.
Qualifications
  • Highly desirable: Possess a formal qualification from a recognised tertiary institution in Spatial Science, Oceanography, Marine Science, Environmental Science, Mathematics/Data Science, or equivalent qualifications/experience deemed suitable by the General Manager, Maritime Safety Queensland.
