The Catholic Schools Office (CSO) is responsible for the leadership, operation and management of systemic schools which educate more than 21,000 students in 44 primary schools, 11 secondary schools, one K-12 school, one flexible learning centre and one special school in the Catholic Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle.

The Gifted Education Mentor K-12 Project Officer aims to:

  • Build the understanding of teachers about high potential and gifted education and appropriate pedagogies in their allocated schools
  • Increase staff capacity in differentiated programming and assessment by planning and leading ongoing professional learning for their allocated schools
  • Contribute to the creation of a network of shared expertise in high potential and gifted education in the Diocese.


Gifted Education Mentor K-12 Project Officers work across three to four schools and spend a nominated day in the Catholic Schools Office (Newcastle West) with Education Officers - Gifted Education for professional learning, collaboration, and resource development.


Desired Skills and Experience:

EXPERIENCE/CRITERIA

  • Ability to articulate a clear understanding of and a personal commitment to Catholic education and the mission of the Church through Catholic schools
  • Ability to lead teacher learning, through the Gradual Release of Responsibility model, to facilitate stimulating and enriching learning environments to enable students to explore and build on their gifts
  • Proven strong interpersonal and communication skills to engage with all key stakeholders sensitively and actively, and demonstrated capacity to build solid trusting relationships with students, staff, and parents
  • Awareness of relevant CSO policy on gifted education and the capacity to implement relevant plans and policies to ensure strong governance
  • Demonstrated ability to articulate and create a shared improvement, innovation and change agenda that align with system priorities and embed a culture of high expectations of student learning and evidencebased high impact teacher practice for high potential and gifted learners.
  • Ability to effectively analyse and respond to student data on high potential and gifted education to enhance learning outcomes.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Fouryear trained teacher classification and a minimum of five years classroom teaching experience
  • Strong professional learning record in the areas of curriculum, pedagogy and/or high potential and gifted learners or willingness to undertake further study; for example, postgraduate studies in gifted education
  • Willingness to work towards Highly Accomplished Teacher level
  • Active NESA Accreditation
  • Current paid NSW Working with Children Check (WWCC) number
  • Completion of anaphylaxis training
  • Willingness to comply with the CSO Accreditation to Work, Teach and Lead Policy
