Are you passionate about offering hope and support to those in need? The Salvation Army at Maryborough and Rockingham chaplaincy group are seeking compassionate volunteers to join our Pastoral Care Team.


As a team member, you will:

  • Provide emotional and spiritual support to inmates
  • Help individuals navigate personal challenges and life changes
  • Prepare and lead services of an ecumenical nature in accordance with the roster
  • Attend the annual State Chaplaincy Board inservice (usually Mid-March each year)

Primary Purpose of the job

(Prisons) Pastoral Care Team Members provide emotional, practical and spiritual support with intention of identifying needs and early intervention where possible. The Pastoral Care Team Member will address emotional, practical and spiritual needs. Support may be provided directly by the Chaplain and/or, through referral to other social and specialist support services, and where requested, the facilitation of the Positive Lifestyle program.


Pastoral Care Team Members have a significant role in the delivery of The Salvation Army Chaplaincy program, partnering with Queensland Correctional Centres and the community.

The role assists with supporting prisoners, offering consolation and encouragement, irrespective of their condition, their faith background and their crimes, without prejudice, judgement, or proselytising.

The Pastoral Care Team Member is an active member of a multi-denominational chaplaincy team and is rostered to attend the nominated correctional centre on a weekly basis.

Role Responsibilities

  • Create supportive connections with the intention of identifying and addressing pastoral, emotional and spiritual needs and enhancing the services to the community and achieving the TSA mission.
  • Maintain documentation, records, reports and data collection to enable program to be effectively monitored and evaluated.
  • Chaplains (Pastoral Carers) are expected to provide educational support to personnel and to supervise volunteers.
  • Provide physical, spiritual, emotional and social support to clients.
  • Identify individual's needs and provide appropriate referrals where needed.
  • Actively participate in and contribute to the multidenominational Correctional Centre Chaplaincy Team, including participation in monthly Correctional Centre Team meetings.
  • Prepare and lead services of an ecumenical nature in accordance with the roster

Qualifications and Experience

  • A commitment to the Christian faith and mission of TSA with an ability to offer pastoral assistance, to offer prayer and to explain the Christian Gospel.
  • Christian Chaplaincy Diploma (or equivalent) and commitment to ongoing personal and professional development.
  • Solid level of experience (3 years) in chaplaincy and pastoral care.
  • Experience working in collaboration with other organisations to develop and tailor programs to meet client needs.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
