The Opportunity

We are currently seeking a Sustainability Education Officer to join our committed and passionate Environmental Sustainability Team, focussed on building sustainable practices within Council and community.

This is a great opportunity to develop, deliver and contribute to a range of educational programs to raise awareness and empower others to take action to protect our natural environment and increase community resilience.

You will be responsible in supporting the community and Council to taking action in the climate emergency, building awareness and consciousness around sustainability, reducing Council's impact upon the natural environment, and supporting the community to move to more sustainable practices.

The Environmental Sustainability team leads Council's strategic approach to carbon reduction, climate adaptation, urban resilience, reducing air pollution, implementing good waste management practices and environmental management.

We develop strategic documents, monitor and report on progress towards goals and targets, lead projects in emerging areas, provide technical advice, and collaborate with other business units to deliver actions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Developing and implementing educational programs to assist our community in adopting sustainable practices, mitigating and adapting to climate change, responsibly managing water and waste, and addressing other relevant sustainability issues.
  • Deliver workshops, promotions, and programs, including from external providers (such as My Smart Garden), community newsletters and running an environmental communications calendar.
  • Working with Council staff and management to ensure cultural change and progressive responsibility for each team minimising environmental impact and responding to climate change.
  • Contributing towards the team's efforts to establish and maintain trusted relationships with both internal and external customers.
  • Commitment to being part of, and continuing to build an inspiring, fun and considerate team

About You

To be considered for this role, you will have the following:

  • Tertiary qualification with some relevant experience; or less formal qualifications with extensive relevant experience working in environmental, climate or community education and behaviour change.
  • Experience and confidence in engaging and working with community on complex and sensitive issues.
  • Sound knowledge of the climate emergency and sustainability, particularly as it relates to and impacts upon the activities and responsibilities of local government
  • Experience in developing educational collateral and delivering programs/events to support sustained behaviour change, with the ability to communicate complex information to a wide variety of audiences
  • Demonstrated experience in project management and ability to manage challenging projects from inception to delivery in order to achieve outcomes on time and within budget.
  • Ability to support the broader team on an as needs basis.
