The intern will be paid by IMT Atlantique (4,05€
/h, so around 600€
/month, depending on the number of work days in the month). Travel and accommodation costs in Australia will be funded by Crossing Lab

The internship takes place in the project LEASARD[1] funded by CominLabs which aim to increase the navigation autonomy of drones as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) in a search and rescue scenario while optimizing the energy efficiency of embedded systems for computer vision.


The internship will be dedicated to the implementation on an NVIDIA Jetson AGC Orin of a new object tracking algorithm based on a Deep Neural Network (DNN) that combines data flows from a standard embedded and an event-based camera to optimize the tradeoff between accuracy and energy efficiency.

The GPU-based implementation will be tested and used in a simulation environment (AIRSIM[2] based on Unreal) that produces the video flows capture by a UAV in a photo-realistic (eg.

Modular Neighborhood from EPIC game) already used by the team to test the proposed new approach.

The main tasks will be:

  • Implementation of standard yolov5 DNN on ORIN board,
  • Interface ORIN board with AIRSIM,
  • Implementation of yolov5 for eventbased detection,
  • Exploration and test of different techniques to combine the 2 methods,
  • Participate in writing the related research paper.


This work will be done in collaboration with a PhD student and a research engineer who will provide reference code and technical support.

This internship will take place at Crossing (Adelaide) and will be jointly supervised by:

  • Jean-Philippe Diguet (CNRS),
  • Panagiotis Papadakis (IMT Atlantique),
  • Matthieu Arzel (IMT Atlantique).


During this internship, the student will have access to state-of-the-art technologies and knowledge in computer vision, and will acquire unique expertise in embedded artificial intelligence.

This internship targets students in final year of Master / Msc and/or Engineering studies.

Mastery of all the fields and tools listed below is not expected, but at least advanced knowledge acquired in previous projects (academic or industrial) in at least two of the scientific fields listed.

Missing skills may be acquired during the course of the internship.

  • Software design:
- knowledge of Python / C / C++ programming languages,
- use of version control tools such as git and configuration management tools such as gitlab,
- use of the OpenCV library,
- use of Unreal Engine,

  • Machine learning / artificial intelligence:
  • basics in deep learning,
- use of a framework (like Pytorch ideally).

  • Embedded systems:
- basics in embedded systems.


In addition to these technical skills, a good level in English is required, both spoken and written, for analyzing scientific documents and collaborating in an international environment.
