The postdoctoral researchers for
Embodied Visual AI in CAR Research Theme - Interactive Machine Learning, will be supervised by Professor Ian Reid.

The role will investigate visual and geometric scene understanding as a means to interact with, query and learn about the environment, and embodied visual AI in which scene understanding is deployed in physical autonomous systems.


The project aims to develop:
- new or improved ways of learning for embodied systems especially through deliberative interaction
- representations of the world, and ways to use the world "as its own best memory"
- the best ways to combine the power of data-driven learning with known tasks.


You will research the limitations of and extensions to teach-and-repeat and reinforcement learning, and how these interact with simulation (and the transferability of sim to real).


To be successful you will need:

  • A PhD in computer science or related discipline, or equivalent industry experience
  • Programming experience and expertise in Matlab, Python, or C++, or other relevant languages
  • Experience and demonstrable expert knowledge in one or more of the following areas: deep learning, SLAM, robotics, artificial intelligence
  • Track record of publications in top-tier machine learning, computer vision, artificial intelligence and/or robotics conferences and/or journals, commensurate with experience and opportunity
  • A strong work ethic, and the ability to work well independently, and as a member of a broader team, including with industrial partners
  • Fluency in written and spoken English, with an ability to communicate scientific ideas to an expert audience
  • Commitment to the principles of equity, diversity and inclusion.

Desirable Characteristics

  • Experience with building real-time systems, multi-threaded programmes and use of GPU hardware
  • Experience and/or ability to contribute to the promotion of research capabilities to industry and the wider community.
