**Be part of the Australian Institute for Machine Learning - the largest computer vision and machine learning research group in Australia - and contribute to world-leading research projects at the Centre for Augmented Reasoning.**

The postdoctoral researchers for **Embodied Visual AI** in CAR Research Theme 2 - Interactive Machine Learning, will be supervised by Professor Ian Reid. The role will investigate visual and geometric scene understanding as a means to interact with, query and learn about the environment, and embodied visual AI in which scene understanding is deployed in physical autonomous systems. The project aims to develop:

- new or improved ways of learning for embodied systems especially through deliberative interaction
- representations of the world, and ways to use the world “as its own best memory”
- the best ways to combine the power of data-driven learning with known tasks.

You will research the limitations of and extensions to teach-and-repeat and reinforcement learning, and how these interact with simulation (and the transferability of sim to real).

**To be successful you will need**:
1. A PhD in computer science or related discipline, or equivalent industry experience

2. Programming experience and expertise in Matlab, Python, or C++, or other relevant languages

3. Experience and demonstrable expert knowledge in one or more of the following areas: deep learning, SLAM, robotics, artificial intelligence

4. Track record of publications in top-tier machine learning, computer vision, artificial intelligence and/or robotics conferences and/or journals, commensurate with experience and opportunity

5. A strong work ethic, and the ability to work well independently, and as a member of a broader team, including with industrial partners

6. Fluency in written and spoken English, with an ability to communicate scientific ideas to an expert audience

7. Commitment to the principles of equity, diversity and inclusion.

**Desirable Characteristics**

8. Experience with building real-time systems, multi-threaded programmes and use of GPU hardware

9. Experience and/or ability to contribute to the promotion of research capabilities to industry and the wider community.
