As part of the clinical education for Allied Health students at The University of Adelaide, students work with actors who portray simulated patients in clinical scenarios. This simulated-based education experience runs either as an intensive placement offering, as an ongoing weekly commitment, or as single sessions.

The School of Allied Health Science and Practice is seeking actors to join our team on a casual basis in the role of Simulated Patient (SP). SPs can be required to portray up to two or three different patient scenarios within a day, with role-specific training provided immediately prior to the interaction with students.

For each patient scenario, SPs will be provided with a patient profile and relevant medical details, but the role will not be scripted. SPs will be required to improvise the scenario within the details that have been provided. Students will complete physical assessments with SPs which may include walking assessments, listening to their chest, testing their muscle strength, observing how they get in and out of bed, or testing their balance. Cognitive and interview-based assessments are also undertaken, as well as a focus on activities of daily living. To facilitate physical assessments, it is routine for patients to be asked to disrobe to their underwear and as such, this may be requested of our simulated patients.

Inpatient simulation-based education is delivered in our brand new 12-bed simulated hospital space, and within our clinical teaching spaces. The three facilities are located on the North Terrace campus, adjacent to Frome Road. The campus is easily accessible by public transport.

Simulated Patient role requirements vary from two-day commitments, up to 20-day intensive placements depending on the demographic requirements of the scenario, while other simulation experiences are offered on a recurring weekly or once-off basis. Hours vary depending on the scenario requirements, from a minimum of three to eight hours.

Applicants of all backgrounds, ages and demographics are encouraged to apply. Applicants should have relevant acting experience, but professional training is not a requirement.
