The Network Development Manager of backbone capacity will deliver and enable AWS's backbone connectivity experience that sets the global standard for AWS network performance, availability, security and cost for our customers.

The manager will be part of a team owning the planning and delivery of all Amazon backbone network connectivity.

Key job responsibilities

  • Lead a team of highly qualified network, system and software development engineers on scaling backbone capacity as well as work with partner teams involved in fiber delivery and optical line system deployments
  • Be a technical and solution oriented leader with the ability to deep dive and break down complex tasks
  • Ensure that backbone capacity design, management, implementation and deployment operations involving provisioning, decommissioning or fabric migrations are sound and executed at scale, safely keeping AWS ahead of backbone customer demand
  • Continuously promote safe delivery through change control, automation, innovation and operational excellence initiatives
  • Focus and manage operations and process optimization using relevant data, metrics and dashboarding techniques
  • Keep close and collaborate with internal customers, partner teams and other stakeholders on backbone capacity delivery operations, planning and initiatives.

Operational Excellence

  • As a manager within the Networking team you will be expected to drive operational excellence in everything we do. This includes creating sane processes and procedures to improve efficiency in our daytoday tasks and projects.
Operational Measurement and Optimization

  • As a Network Development manager you will be expected to drive quality into the metrics we report and to create mechanisms to assist us in focusing on the areas that give us the best ROI. This includes measurement of the backbone operational performance, availability, network capacity, trends, etc. You will drive and define processes that optimize our workflow and create efficiencies in how we operate to drive continual improvement.
Technical Leadership

  • As a manager of a highly technical team, which has responsibility for performance and operational availability of the Amazon global backbone network, you will be expected to have a deep knowledge of your area. As part of your role, you will be required to review and approve network changes for your team. Additionally, you will on occasion need to develop a detailed, lowlevel understanding of network issues that do occur and to be able to represent those issues at operational management review meetings.
Goal Setting and Delivery

  • You will directly own defining or refining and delivering strategic goals for your team. As part of this responsibility, you will be expected to communicate goals to the team, align the necessary resources, and communicate status to the wider leadership team.
Performance Management/Team Health

  • You will own all facets of performance and career management for the team. Regular oneonone meetings with all team members are required. You will be expected to provide both technical and soft skills mentoring in order to maintain a wellrounded, worldclass organization. This includes project management, quality audits and coordination of training sessions with seniorlevel engineers as well as daytoday oversight of the team including scheduling of a 7x8x365 operational rotation.
Recruiting and Hiring

  • You will take the lead in hiring quality personnel who not only fit the needs of the current organization but also will allow the team to scale with platform and service growth. You will coordinate with Amazon and external recruiting staff to evaluate potential candidates, participate in initial phone screens and provide relevant guidance and feedback during onsite interview loops. You will also be responsible for ensuring that proper training takes place for all new hires.
Automation

  • You will be heavily involved in developing automation, as well as setting our sister automation teams' roadmap, based upon analyzing and identifying significant opportunities where automation can tackle volume, systemic or critical operational issues.
12x7 Oncall

  • As the leader of this team, you will be expected to be part of a 12x7 management escalation rotation.

The successful candidate will have a proven track record of success in driving operational excellence, including coordinating and driving issues to resolution autonomously utilizing excellent judgment skills.

Experience in building and managing a team of strong technical people, and prior ownership of the operation of a mission-critical team is crucial to success.

Must have the ability to contribute to and support long-term visions and direction regarding Networking at Amazon.

Melbourne, VIC, AUS- 5+ years of relevant network engineering experience

  • 5+ years people management experience or relevant leadership experience
  • 3+ years of Past experience with network operations either as a manager or individual contributor.
  • Working knowledge of Networking (TCP/IP, Routing/Switching & Troubleshooting)
  • Depth of experience creating and implementing high quality, high volume recruiting plans · Experience contributing to the creation and implementation of high quality, high volume recruiting plans
  • Experience presenting root cause analysis and error correction from operational events to senior management
  • Working knowledge and experience of developing operational metrics
  • Indepth knowledge of Networking · Experience in contributing to the definition and implementation of automation opportunities within an operations environment
  • Experience in agile management methodologies
  • Experience with lean methodologies and Six-Sigma or similar qualification
