The C4ISR (Command, Control, Computers and Communication, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance) Design Directorate in the Department of Defence provides the central mechanism within the Strategic Centre to ensure Joint Force C4ISR and Electronic Warfare (EW) technical interoperability. C4ISR Design ensures that the required level of interoperability for all components of and contributors to the Joint / integrated Force is achieved, including military capabilities and corporate enablers, as well as their technologies and data. This is accomplished through the development of the Joint Force C4ISREW design, direction and guidance based on Standards and a Reference Architecture. In the One Defence Capability System, C4ISR Design sits between Force Design and Capability Design.

Head Force Integration (HFI), as the delegated C4ISR Design Authority, provides the Joint Force technical framework. This framework enables the consideration of legacy and emergent capabilities to prioritise the technical development & integration of the Joint Force. C4ISR Design Directorate supports HFI in the design and development of the Joint Force technical architecture.

This work supports Force Integration priorities:

  • Implement C4ISR Design (Undersea Warfare, C4ISR Standards and C4ISR Design Governance).
  • Build relationships across Defence, Coalition and Australian Whole of Government to progress architecture designs and standards
  • Essential: Understand C4ISR Design, engineering processes and/or the application of standards as applied to Undersea Warfare, Common Command and Control of Uncrewed Systems and Electromagnetic Manoeuvre Warfare.
  • Essential: Familiarity with ADF warfighting and operational activities.
  • Highly Desirable: High-level expertise across a range of C4ISR and EW technical disciplines.
  • Highly Desirable: Expertise in architectural processes and views as well as systems of systems thinking through Models Based Systems Engineering Toolsets.
  • Desirable: Expertise in C4ISR and EW systems that enable system autonomy.
  • Desirable: Data Science and visualisation.
