The opportunity we have available


The Classification Branch provides policy and operational advice, education and training on the classification of films, computer games and publications.

It delivers operational and secretariat support to the Classification Board and Classification Review Board and supports industry through the administration of approved classification tools.

The Branch is also responsible for the oversight of the Classification (Publications, Films and Computer Games) Act 1995 and the National Classification Scheme.


The Assistant Director will be part of the leadership team managing the Classification Branch through change and contributing to shaping the future of classification in Australia.

The Assistant Director is part of a small team and is responsible for a diverse range of tasks, including:

  • Working with industry to implement legislative reforms to the classification scheme
  • Designing an evaluation and reporting framework for the legislative reforms, including briefings for departmental executives and the Minister
  • Providing advice to industry entities developing and seeking ministerial approval of classification tools
  • Reporting on the performance of newly approved classification tools to departmental executives and the Minister
  • Engaging and fostering productive relationship with the Classification Board on reform implementation and monitoring of classification tools
  • Preparing correspondence, reports and briefings for departmental executives, the Minister and the Australian public and responses to media enquiries
  • Liaising with internal and external stakeholders, including the legal services, media services, Ministerial and Parliamentary Services branches, and the films and computer games industry
  • Contributing to the strategic communications plan for industry and the Australian public on classification reform
  • Participating in developing and implementing future classification reform agenda as determined by government.


The role may involve some travel to Canberra and viewing film, game or publication content that is high in impact and/or objectionable.


Note:

A merit pool will be established for a period of 18 months from the date of this advertisement as a result of the selection process to fill similar vacancies in the department and across the APS.
