Role overview:


The Configuration Manager undertakes project configuration management activities to ensure that the processes followed and data produced for newly developed and supported products meets customer and company requirements throughout its life.

This includes the management and control of data and support to engineering and other project team members related to product configuration management processes, practices and systems.


Primary responsibilities:

Undertake configuration management (CM) activities as required to support new product development and product support, including but not limited to:

  • Drafting and managing project Configuration Management Plans (CMP)
  • Selection and data management of Configuration Items (CI)
  • Establishment and management of product baselines including functional, allocated and product baselines
  • Management of the Configuration Control Board (CCB) together with the associated workflows and reporting
  • Provision of support to Engineering Change Proposals (ECP) and Contract Change Proposals (CCP) as required
  • Coordination of the delivery of engineering and CM deliverables to meet customer requirements
  • Oversight and coordination of the engineering release process
  • Definition of attributes/meta data for parts, assemblies and documents
  • Bill of Material (BOM) development and management
  • Part, assembly and document numbering schema together with part number generation and assignment
  • Part criticality definitions
  • Part lifecycle state management
  • Criteria that must be satisfied as part of the promotion process to the next life cycle state
  • Part and document versioning including maintenance of design history information
  • Accountabilities and requirements to create a part or document
  • Interchangeability criteria for parts
  • Rollup impact of versioning or part number changes
  • Development of CM standards, procedures, work instructions, training materials and other documentation as required
  • Creating and managing document types and definition of expected content
  • Ensure a single master template is available for each document type
  • Define document relationships
  • Define documents that must be in the part record
  • Coordination and support for the Deviations and Waiver process and other quality management processes
  • Contributing to configuration status accounting requirements as necessary
  • Participating in configuration audits including functional configuration audits (FCA) and physical configuration audits (PCA) including the associated documentation
  • Reviewing, coordinating and undertaking the CM activities associated with subcontract documentation
  • Managing the Master Record Index (MRI) as required
  • Managing the configuration, update and support of CM systems
  • Providing quality assurance that the CM systems are properly implemented and correctly used
  • Conducting regular audits of product configuration data and configuration management against standards and procedures and checking for issues such as duplicates, incomplete records, missing documents or approvals while ensuring that corrective action is taken in cases of noncompliance
  • Establishing and publishing CM metrics as required
  • Working with peers across the business to ensure that the local CM approach and practices are aligned to corporate processes and standards while meeting customer requirements
  • Undertaking or supporting the implementation of product data into the ERP system as required
  • Communicating with external parties in relation to the transfer and use of information from the CM systems ensuring that data security, privacy and other commercial, contract and legal requirements are respected and followed
  • Managing the data distribution process and ensuring the confirmation of each distribution is monitored and completed in the defined time guidelines
  • Monitoring CM and CM system processes to ensure that they are being applied with the required efficiency and quality and providing metrics and reports on this use as required
