The Lost Dogs' Home is one of Victoria's most iconic animal welfare organisations, caring for around 13,000 lost and abandoned dogs and cats each year.

The Role:
We are seeking a compassionate and dedicated Social Worker to join our team in this exciting newly created position. The role will specialise in reuniting beloved pets with people and families experiencing hardship.
As LDH's Pet and Family Advocate you will play a pivotal role in bringing joy and relief to individuals and families who would otherwise be unable to provide immediate or longer-term care for their pets.
Working across both our North Melbourne and Cranbourne sites, the role will develop personalised care plans and connect clients facing hardship with the support they need to remain connected to their pets.
In addition, the Pet and Family Advocate will provide training and guidance for internal teams, ensuring our client facing staff feel equipped to provide caring, compassionate and personalised service to clients faced with pet separation.
_ Please note that this is a part-time (0.8 FTE) 4 day per week role. _
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop an operational plan to achieve the specified objectives of the Pet and Family Advocate role.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with a network of external service providers who understand LDH's mission and can provide support to clients experiencing hardship.
- Provide emotional support and guidance to pet owners during difficult times and offer resources to help them overcome obstacles.
- Liaise with and provide support and guidance to clients who are separated from their pets and create a pathway and plan for pet reunion.
- Monitor progress towards pet reunion plans, maintaining a client centred approach and adjusting the plan periodically if required.
- Identify and leverage other community pet support initiatives to facilitate access for LDH clients.
- Advocate for the needs of clients both internally and externally, with a view to reuniting as many pets and owners as possible.
- Maintain a high degree of confidentiality when working with clients and always uphold best practice Social Work standards.
- Maintain accurate and uptodate records of plans, interactions, and interventions in compliance with best practice standards.
- A valid driver's license (note: travel is required between North Melbourne and Cranbourne sites).
- Tertiary qualifications in social work, psychology, counselling, or equivalent experience.
- Proven experience working as a social worker, preferably with a focus on family support, support for people experiencing hardship and/or animal welfare.
- Demonstrated experience providing compassionate care to people from a variety of socioeconomic, culturally, and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
- Professional social work confidence including knowledge of contemporary, best practice standards for provision of clientcentred care and referrals in a human services setting.
- A deep understanding of the challenges faced by individuals experiencing hardship and the significance of the humananimal bond.
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to write case notes, briefing reports and communicate effectively with a range of stakeholders.
- Flexible and autonomous working style, and an ability to adapt to a fast paced and changing work environment in an emerging field.
- Ability to balance compassion and care for others with own selfcare and personal stress reduction strategies.
- Accreditation or eligibility for accreditation with the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) _desirable_.
- Knowledge of the Animal Welfare/Animal Care industry _desirable. _
