QIMR Berghofer is a world-leading translational medical research institute focused on improving health by developing new diagnostics, better treatments and prevention strategies, specifically in the areas of Cancer, Infection and Inflammation, Mental Health and Neuroscience, and Population Health.

Based in Herston, Brisbane and working in close collaboration with clinicians and other research institutes, QIMR Berghofer is home to more than 600 scientists, students and non-research staff.


The Cancer Neuroscience Lab focuses on developing strategies to target quiescent (sleeping), treatment resistant brain cancer (glioma) cells using a mixture of novel _in vitro_ and _in vivo_ models, and sequencing technologies.

Targeting quiescent brain cancer cells presents a novel therapeutic strategy in a cancer where median survival times have remained dismal for decades.

To identify novel therapeutic approaches the lab also focuses on understanding how quiescence is regulated in 'healthy' neural stem cells of the adult brain.


Role Purpose / Responsibilities:

The following duties will apply.

  • Laboratory management, including ordering and equipment maintenance to optimise project outcomes.
  • Management of mouse colonies, genotyping, and ensuring animal and human ethics regulatory compliance.
  • Perform a range of mouse, cell culture and molecular biology techniques, including RNA/DNA extractions, immunostaining, tissue fixation/sectioning and microscopy.
  • Assist with provision of technical advice and training for students and technical staff on a range of molecular, cell culture and genetic techniques

About you:

You are required to have;

  • Experience in lab management
  • Experience in cell culture and/or molecular biology techniques (e.g., western blot, qPCR, cloning, lentivirus preparation etc.).
  • Experience working and handling laboratory mice (e.g., perfusion, dissection, genotyping, IP and oral gavage) and willingness to learn new animal techniques
  • Enthusiasm for learning, teamwork and problem solving.
  • Bachelor of Science with firstclass Honours or higher qualification.
It is desirable to have

  • Background in neuroscience, stem cell biology or brain cancer research.
  • Experience in small animal surgical techniques.

Remuneration:
Salary range is $74,397 to $95,329 p.a. plus super and salary packaging. This is a full-time appointment for 2 years.
