Psychosocial Support Service Navigator

About the role:

Reporting through to your Team Leader, your role will be to engage with communities within Mount Isa and beyond, to promote access to psychosocial support and recovery-oriented services to assist individuals to recover and live safely in the community. Reaching clients and professional networks via telephone, visiting in-person and attending events, your responsibilities will include:

  • Frequently travel around North West Queensland to ensure support services and information are provided to rural and remote communities;
  • Support families and carers to gain a better understanding of and engage with the dedicated and specialised support service options available to meet their social needs, including access to safe and appropriate housing;
  • Improve integration of local health services, promote multidisciplinary care, and make the health system more accessible to people with severe mental illness and associated psychosocial disorders;
  • Developing and maintaining relationships with local GP's and other service providers within the community, providing them with accurate information, and minimising gaps in psychosocial support and recovery-oriented service delivery;
  • Representing the organisation in public settings;
  • Obtaining, maintaining and sharing relevant information regarding the availability and capacity of services within the region which can support the social, mental and physical health needs of clients;
  • Proactively promote the Commonwealth Psychosocial Support Service and Head to Health Phone Service; and
  • Liaising with external providers such as professional mental health services, community services and other mental health support services, both government and non-government.

About you:

To be successful in the role, you will have a tertiary qualification in human services, social welfare, social work, psychology or behavioural science and/or equivalent relevant experience in the mental health industry. You will possess:

  • The ability to assess consumer needs in a mental health and psychosocial support capacity;
  • High level communication and rapport building skills, with the ability to communicate across culturally and linguistically diverse groups;
  • Relationship building and maintenance skills with stakeholders of all levels;
  • A broad knowledge of the community sector and primary health care;
  • Excellent time management and critical thinking skills, with the ability to work autonomously;
  • A passion for community psychosocial wellbeing.

You must also be willing to undergo initial and regular national police and/or working with children state checks prior to, and during the course of employment. A driver's licence and competency in driving large distances in rural areas is essential.
