Purpose of Position

  • Assist in delivering a robust, embedded and sustainable health, safety culture throughout the organisation where health and safety management is integral to the way work is performed.
  • Support the ongoing development, implementation and review of the Western Leisure Services health and safety management system management practices and provide related advice and guidance.
  • Champion the health, safety culture through coaching and influencing of stakeholders and the provision of technical advice and support.

Job Description:

We are seeking an enthusiastic, passionate and committed individual to join our team on a part time basis as a Safety Officer. The position will report to our Risk & Safety Manager and Risk & Safety Coordinator and will be responsible for delivering a robust, embedded and sustainable health, safety and risk culture throughout the organisation.

In particular, the role is responsible for:

  • Providing professional support and advice to Managers and Coordinators on OHS and Risk related matters
  • Develop, implement and review operational risk registers
  • Conduct/facilitate risk assessments on operational safety tasks and provide recommendations on control measures and safety improvements
  • Conduct manual handling risk assessments in line with OHS regulations, codes of practice and other guidelines to support WLS manual handling risk reduction procedures
  • Carry out in house health and safety audits to ensure that the departments are working in compliance with the health and safety standards
  • Day to day management, administration and reporting of WLS' OHS Management System including oversight over WLS' injury management and return to work programs
  • Oversee and review regular workplace inspections by all departments
  • Monitor reported incidents and hazards and ensure these are effectively recorded and, where appropriate, notified to the relevant authority

Desired Skills and Experience:

To be successful in this role, you must have good people skills including excellent skills in building relationships with stakeholders and holding others accountable. You will be a solid and effective communicator with the ability to facilitate OHS improvements applying problem solving principals:

  • Occupational Health and Safety Certificate or relevant experience in the field as a minimum (or willingness to obtain)
  • Understanding of the OHS Act and associated Regulations
  • Experience in implementing OHS Management Systems including; facilitating risk assessments, workplace inspections, hazard identifications, incident investigations and return to work procedures
  • Experience in manual handling risk management
  • Experience in the aquatics, leisure and recreation industry is desirable although not essential
  • Current Working with Children – Employee Check and Police Check
