We are looking to create a pool for filling permanent and fixed-term vacancies, both full-time and part-time, that may come up during the school year 2024. Appointments can be made from this pool at any time for positions starting in 2024.
About the Role
The position of the Aboriginal and Islander Education Officer aims to enhance the academic performance of Aboriginal and Islander students by providing them with the necessary educational and cultural support to ensure they feel welcomed, respected, understood, and supported, empowering them to reach their full academic potential.
To excel in this role, you need to be dependable and adaptable, offering support and effective assistance to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, their families, teachers, the school, and the community by sharing knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, language, and culture.
About the School
Broome Primary School, founded in 1901, stands as the oldest educational institution in the region, deeply valuing its historical milestones, infrastructure, and the accomplishments of past and present students. Situated on Yawuru land, the school celebrates the vibrant Aboriginal heritage alongside the diverse multicultural fabric of the Broome community. Despite facing a tragedy with a fire incident in January 2020 that significantly impacted the school, plans are underway for the construction of a new administration building and classroom block equipped with top-notch facilities, set to be ready for use in early 2022. Earlier this year, the Yawuru People bestowed a blessing upon the school in a special ceremony, sharing the phrase 'Jirrilngany ngarrungunil, yagarrmijala', translated as 'Strong People, we will rise up'. This motto has become a source of inspiration for students, staff, and parents, fostering a commitment to sustained growth and success for the school.
To excel in this position, you should be able to demonstrate the following skills and qualifications:
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, enabling effective engagement with students, educators, parents, community members, and professional staff in the planning and execution of educational programs.
- Excellent interpersonal abilities to engage with individuals across various levels and settings, including community members, educators, and other professionals.
- Capacity to contribute to the school team and offer multicultural guidance in program development, language resource creation, and education and behavior management program assessment.
- Proficiency in supporting teachers with the implementation of educational and behavior management initiatives.
- Solid organizational skills to facilitate the delivery of impactful education programs to students.
- Ability to contribute to the overall health and welfare of students.
