The Leader of Aboriginal Torres Strait Islander Learning & Wellbeing leads the delivery of support to schools to meet the needs and aspirations of Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander students, to ensure academic achievement improves, students are engaged in their schooling and to ensure the authentic integration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island perspectives into curriculum.

The Catholic Schools Office (CSO) is responsible for the leadership, operation and management of systemic schools which educate more than 20,000 students in 45 primary schools, 11 secondary schools, one K-12 school, one flexible learning centre and one special school in the Catholic Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle. The position of CSO Leader of Aboriginal Torres Strait Islander Education and Wellbeing from a system level.

The Leader of Aboriginal Torres Strait Islander Learning & Wellbeing leads the delivery of support to schools to meet the needs and aspirations of Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander students, to ensure academic achievement improves, students are engaged in their schooling and to ensure the authentic integration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island perspectives into curriculum. This involves:

- building strong collaborative relationships to improve skills and practices and aligning with Learning and Wellbeing initiatives,
- developing and sourcing teaching resources for schools and students,
- understanding Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander students and their families' concerns and issues,
- providing support to schools in identifying and implementing successful strategies to address any areas of concern,
- ensure the needs of our Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander students have quality wellbeing and learning in our schools to reach their growth potential.

Leading the understanding of the intent of the Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle’s Reconciliation Action Plan - Reflect will be essential to the realisation of these objectives.

**Desired Skills and Experience**:
**EXPERIENCE/CRITERIA**
- Ability to articulate a clear understanding of and a personal commitment to Catholic education and the mission of the Church through Catholic schools.
- Identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person.
- Have a deep understanding of issues facing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and their families, with experience in supporting schools and students in identifying and implementing successful strategies to address priority areas.
- Ability to support Diocesan staff and schools to develop, implement and review Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education at school level, particularly in achieving national goals.
- Experience implementing initiatives to promote learning experiences to improve student outcomes and in imbedding Aboriginal and Torres Trait Island perspective into pedagogy and curriculum.
- Ability to communicate respectfully, sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

**QUALIFICATIONS**
- Qualifications as a four-year trained teacher
- Active NESA Accreditation
- Current paid NSW Working with Children Check (WWCC) number
- Level C Accreditation to Work, Teach and Lead (willingness to work towards)

**Conditions of employment**

The position is classified as a Grade 4, with a starting salary of $154,544 plus super.

The position will be covered by the Catholic Schools Office Enterprise Agreement, which includes compensatory leave (two weeks per annum) in the school holidays.
