This role is required to collaborate with all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living on the lands of all traditional custodians across South Australia, Australia and potentially globally.


Join us at Wardliparingga Aboriginal Health Equity Theme, a nation leading research unit focused on delivering tangible outcomes through research for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Australia.

Prevention and management of diabetes is a priority of the Aboriginal community in South Australia.

Aboriginal health workers and practitioners (AHW/P) are on the front line of delivering evidence-based, culturally and contextually relevant diabetes care to Aboriginal people.

Our Aboriginal Diabetes Workforce Study is recruiting a Credentialled Diabetes Educator (CDE) to facilitate a virtual Peer Support Network (PSNetwork) for AHW/Ps.

The Network aims to provide AHW/Ps with opportunities to support and learn from each other, to foster professional relationships and networks, and encourage personal growth in knowledge and confidence in diabetes management for Aboriginal clients.

About the role

Key responsibilities include:

  • Provide leadership, coordination and facilitation of the PSNetwork
  • Create a virtual network space that is culturally safe, engaging and enjoyable for PSNetwork members.
  • Facilitate and support high quality research activities of the Aboriginal Diabetes Workforce Study related to the PSNetwork.
  • Coordination and facilitation of the PSNetwork for the Aboriginal Diabetes Workforce Study, including:
  • Preparing and/or sourcing tailored educational content for each PSNetwork session.
  • Facilitating respectful and constructive discussion between PSNetwork participants.
  • Encouraging attendance and participation in the PSNetwork sessions.
  • Documentation, including providing written and verbal feedback on each PSNetwork session to the research team.
  • Use of culturally safe, innovative teaching and learning methods that support knowledge transfer.
About You

  • Registered Nurse Division 1, with current registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA), or Accredited Practicing Dietitian with current registration with Dietitians Australia.
  • Post Graduate qualifications in diabetes education and Credentialled Diabetes Educator (CDE).
  • Member of the Australian Diabetes Educator Association (ADEA).
  • Demonstrated experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations or communities.
  • Excellent theoretical and clinical knowledge on all aspects of diabetes and its management, including an understanding of the clinical and social issues relating to diabetes management.
  • Prior experience with the facilitation of group education in a peer learning context.
  • Highly developed interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills, and an ability to communicate with a diverse range of people.
  • Ability to build rapport, effective working relationships, and develop communication links.
Special Requirements

  • DCSI Working with Children Check, Vulnerable Persons Related Employment Screening and National Police Clearance may be required.
  • Computer and Internet access will be required if not located at SAHMRI, North Terrace, Adelaide.
