Join CSIRO's CarbonLock Future Science Platform initiative**CSIRO Early Research Career (CERC) Postdoctoral Fellowships provide opportunities to scientists and engineers who have completed their doctorate and have less than three years of relevant postdoctoral work experience. These fellowships aim to develop the next generation of future leaders of the innovation system.


CSIRO's CarbonLock Future Science Platform (FSP) is seeking a CERC Fellow to join a team of scientists and software engineers dedicated to publishing world-leading science and delivering information for policy development and decision-making.

The FSP will explore new long-lasting carbon removal solutions, investigating several potential technologies, and considering their environmental impact, efficiency, cost and scalability.


As part of the Ocean-based carbon storage group in the FSP, the CERC Fellow investigate the potential to speed up the ocean's uptake and/or subsequent storage of atmospheric carbon.

More specifically, our team is exploring and advancing our understanding of the potential for electrochemical ocean carbon dioxide removal (CDR).


Your duties will include:

  • Collaborating with the CSIRO coastal modelling teams to lead the search for a suitable OAE site.
  • Designing and analysing model simulation experiments to estimate better the physical and biogeochemical state of marine waters at the OAE site.
  • Effectively using High-Performance Computing (HPC) facilities and technologies for model simulations and analysis of the outputs.

To be considered you will need:

  • A doctorate (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a PhD) in a relevant discipline area, such as numerical modelling in physical and / or biogeochemical oceanography or marine chemistry

Please note:

To be_ _eligible for this role you must have
no more than 3 years (or full-time equivalent) of postdoctoral research experience_.

  • Experience in the development and/or interpretation of numerical models of the ocean and the analysis of large and complex model data sets.
  • Experience working in a Linux/UNIX computing environment and a high level of programming skills in languages such as Python, C.
