Instrumentation Engineer / Technician - Seagoing

Join our team and help us solve challenging technical problems at sea. In this unique role, you will support the iconic infrastructure of the RV Investigator, Australia's leading blue-water research facility. We offer generous sea allowance and flexible working arrangements.

We are looking for an enthusiastic engineer or technician to join CSIRO's Seagoing Instrumentation Team. Your work will be crucial in enabling scientific research from the Antarctic to the tropics aboard the RV Investigator, providing up to 85 days of seagoing support per year.

  • Participate in research voyages on the RV Investigator.
  • Operate scientific equipment.
  • Perform maintenance and repair of instrumentation.
  • Report on equipment performance.
  • Contribute to smooth electronics and instrumentation support on the vessel.
  • Prepare documentation, parts inventory, and service equipment and tools.
  • Identify opportunities for system improvements and develop solutions.
  • Collaborate and communicate effectively with stakeholders.

Your duties will also include:

This position will be based in the CSIRO Marine Laboratories in Hobart, offering on-the-job training and mentoring. We are looking for a candidate passionate about marine and atmospheric science and able to work effectively as part of a diverse team.

Location: Hobart, TAS

Salary: AU$93,267 – AU$105,517 plus up to 15.4% superannuation, plus Duty at Sea Allowance

Tenure: Specified term of 3 years

To be considered for this role, you will need a tertiary qualification in Information Technology, Engineering, or relevant experience. You should have experience in data acquisition equipment, fault-finding, maintenance, and technical support. Mechanical aptitude, organizational skills, and the ability to work in remote environments are essential.

We encourage applications from Australian/New Zealand Citizens or Australian Permanent Residents. The selected candidate will undergo relevant checks and training, including a Remote Area Seagoing Medical.
