Electoral Commissioner for NSW:

The NSW Government is seeking to appoint a full-time Electoral Commissioner for NSW.

The Electoral Commissioner is an independent statutory appointee who is responsible for administering State parliamentary elections and other elections as authorised by law.

The Commissioner occupies a central position in the State's democratic system.


The Electoral Commissioner also leads the NSW Electoral Commission Staff Agency, a separate public sector agency with approximately 385 staff who support the exercise of the Commissioner and the NSW Electoral Commission's statutory functions.

The Commissioner is responsible for the day-to-day management, including financial management, of the staff agency.

The Commissioner is expected to lead staff in shaping and delivering services in a way that promotes public confidence in the integrity, transparency and effectiveness of the NSW electoral process.


High quality applicants for the role will have an exemplary record of public sector and/or regulatory experience, a deep understanding of government structures and the democratic process and be used to operating under prescriptive legislative frameworks.

They will be accustomed to working in politically sensitive environments and managing matters with a high level of complexity. They will demonstrate experience in providing strategic direction and leadership, and oversight of service delivery in a multidisciplinary organisation. They will have strong experience of operational leadership in an event-driven environment.

Exceptional integrity, a track record of scrupulous impartiality, and a demonstrated ability to build and sustain mutually respectful relationships are essential.


The appointment will be for a term of up to 10 years. The Commissioner's remuneration is determined by the Statutory and Other Offices Remuneration Tribunal and is currently an annual salary of $406,110.
