Position Title:  High School Counselor

Location:  Mason High School / Mason Public Schools / In-Person

Reports to:  Principal

Education and Experience (Required)
Possess a Master’s degree in Guidance and Counseling from an accredited institution

Possess a valid Michigan secondary teaching certificate with an endorsement in counseling (NT)

Possess a School Counselor License

Possess a Preliminary Authorization to work as a School Counselor

Possess a Temporary School Counselor Authorization

Education and Experience (Desired)

Three to five years of counseling experience at the high school level with involvement in organizing and conducting group guidance activities Active involvement in guidance and counseling professional organizations Established record of positive attitude and rapport with students Excellent interpersonal skills Collaborative/Growth orientated Demonstrated ability to work effectively with colleagues, families, and students A willingness to learn new skills, to be reflective, and to acquire new knowledge along with evidence of being flexible and having superior problem-solving skills Evidence of being highly organized and having excellent time-management skills Proven leadership qualities such as being a member of a school improvement team, a member of a curriculum council, a chair of a student organization, or the chair of a grade level or department Certification in additional subject areas


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Provide counseling services to assigned students Assist staff members in meeting the needs of students Familiarity and understanding of Comprehensive Guidance Knowledge of post-secondary admissions and financial aid scholarship process Interpersonal skills in areas of crisis management and problem solving Knowledge of how to work with students through social/emotional issues and substance issues Ability to make connections with community partners and resources Knowledge of Educational Development Plans and Career Pathways Ability to communicate with students, parents, and staff members Familiarity with state testing Knowledge of 504 process and implementation


Physical Requirements and Work Environment:

This position requires long periods of standing, sitting, and walking The position requires occasional lifting of supplies Work takes place both indoors and outdoors, with some travel to other schools or field trip locations

Schedule:  Position begins 2024-25 School Year

Salary:  Per MDMEA Agreement ($41,017 to $85,433) Commensurate with experience

Benefits:  Medical, dental, vision, life, long-term disability, and paid time off per the bargaining unit contract.
